When we arrived at my house, all I could feel was my heart beating faster than it should. I liked him. Though I didn't know why. He got out of the car and walked over to the passenger side, to open my door.

He smiled at me as I got out the car. We walked together, up the front steps.

"I still want to take you somewhere", said Ricky.

"Really, now? And where would we be going?"

"Out to eat, probably tomorrow, at 8:00 p.m."

"Is that you asking me on a date?"

"Only if it's you saying yes, to going on a date with me." He smiled. "So is it a yes?"

I unlocked my front door. "It's a maybe."

He laughed, and gave me a fake sad look.

"Oh, well. I guess you'll just have to think about it."

He handed me a piece of paper.

"And in case you change that maybe to a yes, here's my number."

He gave me one last smile, and then started to walk back to his car.

I opened the door and tried to unlock it silently. Then I tried tip-toeing past the kitchen, when I caught a glimpse of mother sitting at the kitchen table. The jig was up.

"Laina, where have you been?"

"Mom, it's only 4:06. Just six minutes."

"I know, and I'm not yelling. It's just that you usually get here at 3:58. And it's also the fact that there was a white, and rather expensive Cadillac in my driveway, which isn't yours."

I remained silent as I waited for her to finish her speech.

"So who where you with?"

"It was a friend from school-"

"A friend from school? Today was your first day. You must really be 'miss popular'."

"Oh, well I-"

"Who was the boy, Laina?"

Let me introduce you to my mom, Ms. Rosina James. She used to be a cool, fun mother. I mean, it's not that she isn't fun anymore. But ever since my dad died when I was five, she changed. She's now more suspicious of me, and also more protective. She now runs a tight ship, which means I'll have to be careful what I say.

"Mom, he wasn't-"

"Who was the boy?"

"It's not like-"

I stopped when my mom shot me a look which meant 'I am not going to repeat the question'.

"Ricky Snyder. He's just another sophomore from school. We started talking and I realized too late that I was going to need a ride... So..."

"And he offered you one?"

"Yes."

I love my mother and all, and I appreciate her... But sometimes I feel like I'm under investigation when I talk to her.

"Well..." She looked up from her laptop and lanced at me. Her gaze softened. "I'm sorry dear, you know I love you. It's just that... This was the first day of school, remember? I know that you make friends quickly. But I think you should slow down with..."

"Mom, I just met him."

My mother looked at me, trying to give me a serious face. But it didn't work and we both burst out laughing.

The tension was broken and we now both felt more comfortable.

"Okay, I won't lecture you anymore." Then she looked down at her laptop.

Alright then, guess I was dismissed. I headed up to my room, taking the stairs two at a time.
