"Hey, do you mind passing me a beer?"
I look up to see an unfamiliar face but nod nonetheless and pass him a can.
The stranger leans on the counter next to me. "Haera, right? I think I've seen you around."
I raise an eyebrow, "You go to my school? I don't think I recognize you."
"Really?" He smirks. "I think I'm pretty popular."
"I don't know about that."
He turns to face me, "That's coming from someone who was just standing here, looking pretty lonely until I came."
I tilt my head to see him clearer and his brown eyes come straight into contact with mine.
"If you're here just to keep me company then I'd prefer you leave. I've only been here for a few minutes and I already feel suffocated. This party sucks. Even the food is bad."
"Someone's in a bad mood, I see." He takes a swig of his beer, "But I guess I would be too, if my girlfriend broke up with me after three years together."
I narrow my eyes at him, "You know about that too? How does everyone even get this information? I haven't told anyone except—"
"Yeah, I dumped her. She was getting a bit too much for me, to be honest. She made everything seem so serious. I mean, how many more years till we graduate? I can't let her tie me down."
My head swivels to find the source of the voice and it's exactly who I hoped it wouldn't be. Johnny.
"I guess there's your answer." Brown-eyed boy says to me. I turn away, trying to keep the tears at bay. He seems to notice, because he suddenly turns wide eyed and he pulls me out the back door.
He pats my head awkwardly, "Hey now, don't cry. You'll find another guy. If you ask me, I think you can do way better. He seems like a douche."
I wipe away the tears at the corner of my eyes and nod. "You're right. I honestly didn't know he was this much of an ass. I'm kind of glad we broke up now."
Brown-eyed boy smiles and shoves hands in his pockets, "See, you're way too good for him—"
He's immediately cut off by a loud, and when I say loud, I mean loud, shriek.
We run back inside the house just in time to see Dami's hand come into contact with the side of Johnny's face. It leaves such a bright red mark that I want to run up to him and apologize.
"And that's what you get for messing with my best friend!" She shouts, Johnny looking up at her in disbelief. He sees me and looks towards brown-eyed boy before stalking off, still holding on to his cheek.
Dami walks over to me and links her arm with mine, "You know he deserved it."
"You didn't have to make such a scene." I sigh but let out a small smile, "I appreciate it though."
She swallows me in a big hug and only let's go when brown-eyed boy clears his throat loudly beside us.
"Oh! Haera, I see you've already met our gracious host. The guy I was talking about in the car. Remember? Hes the one hosting this sick party!" Carol smiles at him, completely oblivious to my internal breakdown.
"Uhh, I've got to go. Give me a minute, I'll be back later." I back away from them slowly before running off to the nearest washroom.
Yukhei? Or Xuxi grabs my arm before I can escape. "Woah, slow down there! What's the rush?"
"I literally just insulted this party right in front of the host. I'm sorry." I bury my face in my hands.
He laughs, the kind of full laugh that makes you want to hear more of it, "No hard feelings, you were right. The food is sort of dry."
My eyes peek out of my hands and I give him a slight smile. He flashes me a lopsided grin that my eyes stay fixated on.
Dami clears her throat loudly behind us. "Sorry to interrupt, but I think your mom is probably looking for you, Haera." She points to the obvious vibration coming from my purse. I fish my phone out of there and sure enough, there are almost a hundred messages from my family.
"I'll wait in the car!" she says hurriedly, winking at me.
I stuff my phone back into my purse and turn back to the brown-eyed boy next to me, "Well, I've got to get going now. For real, this time. Thanks for...you know."
He flashes his lopsided grin once again, "Sure, see you around then."
Right after he starts to walk away, I call out to him once more, "Wait!"
He turns back, a questioning look on his face, "Yeah?"
"What's your name, really?"
"You can call me Lucas," he says and disappears into the crowd.

Dami practically shoved me into the car and turns to me. I could tell she's been holding it in because her smile is so wide, her cheeks could tear apart any second now.
"Nope, I'm not telling you what happened." I say, still waiting for her to drive.
Dami folds her arms across her chest, "Then I guess we'll be staying the night here. Your mom wouldn't mind, right?"
"It was nothing, really. We just chatted a bit and...he just, you know, comforted me when Johnny said those things."
"That doesn't seem like nothing to me." She grins and finally drives away from Lucas' house, "But remember what I said a while ago, Haera. I think he's bad news."
Author's Note:
