Yoon Haera's relationship with her boyfriend was everything to her. So when he suddenly breaks up with her, her world comes crashing down. Not to mention she's left with no date to her distant sister's wedding. So her sister calls upon the groom's b...
My big sister engulfs me in a hug the second I step out of the car.
"I didn't expect to see you here. What's going on?" I ask her worriedly.
Sera moved out with her boyfriend a couple of months ago. She kept in touch with us regularly through random FaceTimes, but her visits were rather rare—they were usually when she had a fight with her boyfriend.
She clasps her hands together, "I have some big news, Haera. I'm—"
"She's engaged!" My mom shouts from the doorway, clearly more excited than even Sera herself.
My eyes widen. Taeyong and Sera were high school sweethearts. They dated for a while but broke up when they went to college because both of them agreed that they wouldn't be able to handle a long-distance relationship. But somehow, they met again after their graduation and it must've been destiny, because now they're getting married.
Sera slowly holds out her hand for me to see the gorgeous ring on her finger. I gasp and look up at her, before wrapping her in a hug.
She lets out a dramatic sigh, "Taeyong finally proposed to me last night. I was going to visit next week and tell you guys the news but I just couldn't wait. I'm getting married!"
Mom puts her arm around Sera's shoulders, "She actually called me this morning but she wanted to keep in a surprise until you came back home."
"Yeah, which took FOREVER. Were you out with that boyfriend of yours again? Johnny, right?" Sera asked.
"Not anymore," I looked away and mumbled.
"What was that, sweetheart?" Mom asked. I shake my head and point to the stairs. She gives me a puzzled look but still nods, and I immediately run up to my room. I flop onto my bed the second I reach my room with a sigh.
"Okay, Haera. What's up with you?" A voice says the second I step foot into my room.
I jump in surprise. "You followed me up?"
Sera takes a seat on my bed and pats the space next to her. "Come on, tell me what happened."
I sigh and retell the whole story again from start to finish. After a moment, she speaks up, "I expected you guys to break up sooner, to be perfectly honest."
I throw a pillow at her. She dodges effortlessly and continues, "I know you expected it too. Don't deny it, baby sis."
I look away and pout, "It still hurt nonetheless."
"It's a shame, though." Sera rests her chin on her palm. "I wanted you to bring Johnny as your date to the wedding but clearly, that's not happening so..."
I look back at her and raise an eyebrow, "Why do I need a date? Can't I just go alone?"
"Well, you can but...Grandma's going to be there."
Ah, Grandma. The head of the house. Nothing gets past her. Grandma's notorious in the family for being a little too involved in everyone's life. Before I got together with Johnny, she would constantly pester me about getting a boyfriend and even tried to set me up with one of the workers in her shop. It didn't go so well considering he was almost three times my age and got divorced twice. Just the thought of it now makes me want to scream.
"You could just ask one of your guy friends to be your date, right?" Sera asks.
I groan and flop onto my bed, "They're all best buddies with Johnny so that might be a bit awkward."
Suddenly, Sera's eyes light up and she squeals, "I know! How about I get the Taeyong's best man to be your date? It'll be perfect, especially since you're going to be my maid of honor!"
"You want me to go with Taeyong's best man?" Then, her words finally register. My mouth falls open and I look back at her in surprise, "Wait, you want me to be your maid of honor? Really?"
She nods excitedly, "You're my little sis, why wouldn't I? You'll agree to it, right?"
I never really told Sera that after she moved away, I felt a little distanced from her. When we were kids, we were basically inseparable. Despite the eight-year age gap, there was never a time where I felt like I couldn't talk to her about my problems. But when she moved out, I started talking to her less and less. Especially after I got together with Johnny, I just never had the time to call her. I definitely missed her, but I've always assumed she was too busy living her dream life. So we drifted, and I was so sure that if she were to get married one day, her maid of honor would be someone else, someone other than me.
I shake my head and push the thought out of my head, "Of course! But back to the date thing, who exactly is Taeyong's best man? He's not some old dude right?"
"You're clearly still traumatized by that experience with Grandma's employee. But no, he's actually around your age. He's Tae's friend."
"Since when did he have friends that are like five years younger than him?"
"Since childhood, apparently. He babysat the kid for a while and they ended up being really close as they grew up." She explains briefly.
"Fine by me. I'm good with anything as long as Grandma doesn't try to set me up with any other old guys." I pretend to barf.
"I do have one concern about this though," Sera says in such a serious tone that I straighten up in surprise, "I'd feel better if you don't get too close to him. Tae says he's a player, if you know what I mean."
"Don't worry about it. After what happened, I don't think I'm ready to date so suddenly anyway." I reassure her.
Sera's eyes soften and she strokes my hair, "I just don't want you to get hurt again."
