Chapter 45: Our Pasts

Rosa's PoV

We all start walking to Learoths house. I motion Nava to come over to me even though she's talking with the Head Knight. She comes over and I ask her “Did you see what I saw during the meeting?”

“It depends on what you mean. There was a lot to see.”

“When Nightbreeze threatened them all that if they didn't stop arguing then she would walk out on them. The Speaker smiled.”

“What's so important about that?”

“I think the Speaker likes her. Not every person can threaten everyone, including the Speaker that they will walk out without saying anything else.”

“Is there anything else to prove your point?”

Quintrine says “Look up front. The Speaker is walking with Nightbreeze in the front.”

Nava looks and says “I guess I was too distracted to notice that.”

I ask her “Why else would the Speaker want to come along and walk? He had to get a reason to talk with her without revealing he likes her. The Qualinesti don't like the Kagonesti. At least the leaders don't because they have slaves. They wouldn't be happy if they knew he likes her.”

“Are you sure you are not getting it wrong? He could like her as a friend. And we don't need her getting messed up with another relationship, Drama, or anything else from her past right now.”

“I think it could work. It's better than her pretending to be in love with Elaethen to get information.”

“That wasn't all pretending.”

“You mean she actually started falling in love with him?”

“Yea she did. But everyone doesn't need to know that.”

“I guess that makes sense why she's still wearing his ring even though it's around her neck.”

“She also has something carved by Thallan.”

“Wow. I didn't know she had it that bad.”

“She probably has it the worst from any of us. She was in slavery for over twenty years. She got punished for doing something wrong and she took some of the others punishments too. I get her out and she eventually ends up getting tortured. Me and her go back and she falls in love with him even though it was supposed to be undercover work. Somewhere in there her dad kills himself. Her best friend as a kid turned evil and she had to kill him. She helped kill Elaethen. Her mom got killed too. And it doesn't help that she's reliving her past by being here. Do you still think she should start a relationship?”

“I guess you're right. I didn't realize how hard it really is for her. But what about you? You never share anything about your past with us. Nightbreeze has it the worse. Quintrine ended up wandering around by herself for however many years until she found you. I travel around by myself but that's my job. I travel and trade different items or information. You never told us about what you do. And what your past is like.”

“I'm going to go talk with Nightbreeze.”

She avoids talking about her past and heads up to Nightbreeze and the Speaker. Quintrine says “Tell me more about you. You never really talk about yourself either. And I don't think Nava is one to really talk. She likes to be by herself or help others if it's for a good reason. What would she do if she got personal with anyone?”

“I'm not sure what would happen.”
