"Just a second" Mitch called back from upstairs. He grabbed his bag and a light jacket and walked downstairs. "Ready!"
Avi chuckled. "You're so excited for a doctor's appointment?"
Mitch rolled his eyes. "No, of course not. I just hope that she'll allow me to sing again and we are going shopping afterwards."
Avi grinned. "We are. And I am looking forward to this appointment, too. It's been how long since we kissed?"
"Five days..." Mitch sighed. "I am just glad it isn't mono. I wonder why she asked me to come in today, though?"
"I don't know. Maybe it's something else you need medicine for?" Avi wondered.
"But I am symptom-free" Mitch said, pouting slightly.
Avi shrugged his shoulders. "I know. And we'll see." He leaned down and pressed a kiss on the top of Mitch's head. That was all he was allowed to do for the moment. A week ago, Mitch had developed symptoms which their doctor referred to mononucleosis. To be sure, she took a blood sample and forbid him any closer physical contact to his husbands so he wouldn't spread whatever he had.
The symptoms had gotten better and one of the nurses had called the day before to tell him that it wasn't mononucleosis, but that he should come in again, with Avi, who had an appointment for a regular check up.
Avi drove them to the practice and together they walked to the reception.
"Good Morning" Avi said.
"Good Morning, Mr Kaplan, Mr Grassi. You're here for..." the receptionist asked.
"I am here for a regular check-up and Mitch was asked to come in with me" Avi explained.
"Ah, okay..." the receptionist said. "If you want you can go through to room number 2, the doctor will be with you shortly."
"Good" Avi said. He took his husband's hand and led him into the room. They had only sat down on the two chairs in front of the desk when their doctor came in. "Hello, Mr Grassi, Mr Kaplan. I'm glad you could make it that quick."
"Of course. I mean Avi had his appointment today anyway" Mitch said. "But... why did you want to see me? It's not mono, isn't it?"
The doctor took a deep breath. "No, it's not mono" she said seriously. "But still, we have found a few things in your bloodwork, which alarmed me."
~
"Cancer..." Mitch said once they were back in the car.
"It's just a suspicion for now" Avi replied, trying to soothe both himself and his husband. "Please don't panic."
"Just take me home, please?" Mitch said.
"Of course" Avi said softly and started the car. "Do you want to call Scott straight away, or..."
Their husband was in Texas for the week. Landon was moving out to college and Scott wanted to be there for his nephew for this huge step, especially because he chose to go come to L.A.
"No." Mitch turned on the radio and turned up the volume to show Avi that he didn't want to talk for the time being.
Avi noticed it and accepted it as well. He was scared, too. Even if it was only one parameter in the bloodwork, the doctor had been honest with them and told them that cancer was a possibility they had to eliminate. She had already phoned the hospital and Mitch would be admitted after the weekend for some tests. For the time being, she had drawn more blood for further tests and sent them home with her best wishes.
