Dinner was a quiet affair. Avi and Shelley cooked together and Mitch decided not to come downstairs, claiming that he still wanted to be alone.
"We'll keep some leftovers for him" Shelley said as Avi looked sadly at the empty space at the table. "I'll go upstairs after dinner and try to talk to him. Maybe we can solve this mess together."
"You must be exhausted, Mama. The day has already been so long for you" Avi argued with a soft voice.
"Maybe I am, but if I can help Mitch, I'd stay up the whole night..." Shelley said with a small smile on her face. "He is so lost and I just want to know why."
Avi took her hand. "Thank you" he said and squeezed it momentarily, before going back to his dinner.
"Oh you're welcome Avi."
After dinner Avi offered to clean up while Shelley went upstairs to talk to his husband.
He busied himself in the kitchen, even though he wanted to just be upstairs with them, finding out what was troubling Mitch.
Once he was done, he sat down in the living room with a glass of water, trying to stay as calm as possible.
"Avi?"
The bearded man didn't know how much time had passed when he heard his mother's voice from upstairs. "Yes, Mama?"
"Come upstairs, please?"
She didn't need to ask twice. Avi's knees were weak when he walked up the stairs, seeing his Mama standing there. "Mama?"
"He asked for you. He's in his closet space" Shelley whispered. "You'll know what to do."
"Okay, thank you..." Avi said softly. He went over to Mitch's closet room. "Hey..." he said softly when he saw his husband sitting on the floor.
Mitch flinched slightly and then looked up. "Avi..." he whispered.
"Mama said you wanted to see me..." Avi said.
Mitch nodded. "Please..." He patted the space beside him.
"Of course." Avi sat down next to his husband. "What is it?"
"I need to tell you something" Mitch said. "Just please promise you won't get mad..."
Avi carefully took Mitch's hand. "I won't, I promise. I am here to help you."
Mitch nodded. He squeezed Avi's hand softly, before he took a deep breath to organise his thoughts, before he finally spoke. "I took my emergency pills. The ones I have for when I get anxious."
Avi took a deep breath. "I'm glad that you're being honest with me, Mitchy" he said to encourage his husband. "Can you tell me when and how many you took?"
"I took one yesterday in the afternoon while you were out. And then this morning when I got up I took two and then another one later and another one after our fight..." Mitch explained. "I... overdosed them, because I didn't want to feel. I wanted to numb myself... until Monday."
"This is why you were so indifferent about everything" Avi concluded.
"I still am feeling numb. I know what is happening, but I just cannot release my feelings right now and it feels so wrong..." Mitch explained. "I'm so sorry. I asked Shelley to take my meds, too, so I wouldn't be tempted to take more. I'm sorry..."
"Shh..." Avi said. "It is okay. You made a mistake and you realised it. Now we need to figure out what to do. Do we need to call your doctor about taking the meds?"
Mitch shook his head. "No, I called her with Shelley. She said that it's okay as long as I don't take anymore. I am not supposed to be alone and definitely not allowed to drive a car or so. She also told me to call her in case I need her tomorrow. I don't know if I will need her, though. I mean I've got you, don't I?"
