Skylar was consumed by a oppressive feeling of sadness. Emily, Derek and Rossi said their goodbyes and she suddenly realized that this was it; the entire BAU would already be back in Quantico by lunch. From the moment they left the building, she felt loneliness creep back into her soul.

It was depressing sometimes, being alone. She once considered being alone a gift, but over the course of the last few hours Skylar realized that her loneliness was nothing but a shield from the outside world. In the end, being alone was simply but a curse that paralyzed her ability to be a functioning member of society.

What made the sudden wave of separation anxiety even worse: Spencer behaved weirdly before getting into the SUV. He avoided both eye contact and conversation. He didn't even bother to say goodbye before the first part of the team rushed off to the airport.

He just left her there, dropped her like a hot towel — Skylar had no idea what she'd done to deserve this.

The last one to approach the glass door of the building was Aaron Hotchner. He offered her his hand in a friendly manner.

"Agent Brown," he said. Skylar met his hand in a firm shake.

"Agent Hotchner," she said, "thank you so much for your help. I honestly don't know what we — well, mostly me — would've done without you and your team."

The following seconds were the first she ever saw him smile. Seriously, she had come to believe he just couldn't smile, so it was a big surprise. "We gave the profile, but you worked the case," said Hotch, and the words coming out of his mouth sounded truer than Skylar could've ever expressed herself.

She shook her head a little before she disagreed. "Nah, I just did my job," she said. "I mean, that's the whole point, isn't it? To serve and protect?"

"Yes," he said with a nod. A pregnant pause before, "There is something else I wanted to discuss with you before me and my team head back to Quantico."

Skylar furrowed her eyebrows and found herself asking, "What is it?" She was slowly starting to get anxious. The decision she made back at the crime scene hadn't been professional — Aaron Hotchner was the definition of professionalism, as you all probably know — and now she was afraid that choice would come back to bite her in the butt.

"I kind of went over your head a little," Hotch stated as a nonchalant matter of fact. "And I put in a transfer request with your boss," he stopped to watch her expression change from nervous to shocked and, after an agonizing long moment, said, "A transfer request to come work for me at the Behavioral Analysis Unit in Quantico."

Though the shock waves still kept her body uneasy, Skylar's expression changed as the realization settled in. He didn't have her deported to another Unit because she failed, he wanted to transfer her to his team because she was good. He believed she was meant for the BAU. Behavioral Analysis Unit. Profiling.
