Hotch had ordered JJ and Emily to check in with the crime scene, to see if they could find anything.
JJ checked every aspect of the family's life, searched through photos and belongings, but all she found were even more reasons the Baileys hadn't deserved to die.
"This can't be it," Emily said after a while.
JJ placed the family's musical collection back on the shelf with a sigh. "I know," she said, "it's frustrating. Have you seen the pictures? The Baileys were the definition of a perfect family. Nothing here is out of place."
"Garcia couldn't find anything either," said Emily. "There were no complaints or domestic abuse claims in the family records. No obvious connection to the mob, nothing. But she's digging as deep as she can," — she nodded in agreement — "Anyway, Macy got into college just a few towns over, that way she could stay closest to home. Even little Tucker is ahead of his classes already, and he's seven. He's some kind of mini-Reid."
JJ chuckled. "I just can't believe someone would do all this just to abduct a little boy."
"Yeah, me neither. This makes no sense."
"How about the blackout?"
"The cables were ripped out, just like Garcia said."
"Did she find any other relating blackouts in the area?"
"If you count storm-related ones," said Emily. JJ sighed in exasperation. "The list is too big to narrow it down, so no."
They looked around, only the faint sound of the wind brushing through the trees audible in the background. "What if they got in through the windows?" JJ asked.
"It's possible, but weren't they locked from the inside?"
"They were, but it's not that hard if you decide to leave through the front door."
"If only we had forensic evidence and not just the stench of death," Emily said. She shook her head. "Well, before we lose our minds," she decided to change the subject, "what do you think about Agent Brown?"
JJ traced a finger over the marble fireplace. "She's nice," she said absentmindedly.
Prentiss scoffed. "Just nice?"
"Well, I like her. And the guys like her, too, so I think Hotch made the right decision."
"Mh," she looked at the ceiling, wishing for the answers to just magically appear, but she had no such luck. A loud groan left her lips. "I think she's incredible," said Emily. "And she works well with Reid. They're a great fit."
