The group of profilers did not, in fact, find Joshua Carys at the location that Garcia reported to have found him. When they got there, the place was abandoned with no one in sight. Other than a perfectly placed burner phone, there was nothing that even suggested his presence. After an intensive search, they concluded that the rapist had lured them into a trap. A dangerous one.
Emily's features fell. "Hotch," she said upon her realization. He turned to her. "We need to call Garcia. Now!"
Penelope stormed into the office-turned-bedroom, but it was already too late. The bed was neatly made, the bag stood untouched on the table next to the window. Skylar's phone laid abandoned next to her belongings. She was gone.
Penelope dropped the computer in her hands, an ear-piercing cry leaving her lips. "She's gone!" She yelled. "Agent missing-" she began to roam the halls, "I repeat, Agent missing! We need to find her. This is a life or death situation. I repeat this is a life or death situation! Anderson!" Just the man she was looking for. She ran as fast as her heels could carry her.
Back in her apartment, Skylar opened the door quietly so she wouldn't alert the neighbors. Carol from next door worked the night shift as an ER nurse twice a week, she remembered that. She probably wasn't home, but you can never be too careful.
The apartment was cold, empty. Skylar turned on the small lamp in the entrance hall. The lights from outside shone through the glass front, illuminating the kitchen in soft yellow light. She took her gun and placed it on the dresser. The walls around made her feel safe for the first time in hours. She was comfortable.
"Mommy's home!" She chirped. No response. With a frown, she entered further into the apartment. "I said, mommy's home!" Again, nothing. "Seriously Oreo, where are you?"
The cat hid underneath the kitchen cabinet. "Hey, you, what are you doing down there? Did Anderson scare you off? Yes, he did!" She wanted to pick her up, but Oreo slid back further. "What's wrong, baby?" The cat meowed quietly. "I know, I shouldn't have left you alone for so long. It's a long story. No need to be pissed at me." Skylar scoffed. The cat still didn't move out of its hiding spot.
"Young Lady, it's time to come out!" She said firmly. "We don't have much time. We need to leave, go visit your aunties and uncles."
When Oreo didn't move once again, Skylar gave up. She dropped her hands, sighed, and retreated into her bedroom. She could at least take some fresh shirts if she was already there. She packed another bag with necessities. For minutes, she got lost in her thoughts and the depths of her closet that she almost didn't hear the grizzly sound coming from her living room. She dropped the hanger.
"Oreo, did you drop another vase?" She yelled. "You know these were expensive! Jesus, sometimes you are a stupid cat!"
She walked back. As soon as she saw the light, her heart dropped to the bottom of her stomach, dissolving in acid.
