Dean drops the clip out of the gun, taps it against the butt, and replaces it. He opens the door to the lab and shuts it behind him; Duane is tied to the chair, and Mark, Pam and Dr Lee stand nearby. Duane is pleading for his life. Mark doubts if they should shoot.
'I got no choice.' Dean says he points his gun. His finger goes for the trigger. The moment stops. Everything goes quiet around him. It's not that they're not talking, but he doesn't hear them anymore. She is right. He cannot take this back. Why does she have to be right? 'Damn it.' He lowers his gun and leaves the room.
Four hours later, Duane's blood is still clean. He isn't the one infected, but the nurse is. She tried to infect Sam.
They want to kill him; Dean is not having any of it.
'Tie him up.' Rose suggests.'
Sam goes against her: 'They're right. I'm infected; just give me the gun, and I'll do it myself. I'm not going to become one of those things.'
Dean tosses Mark his keys: 'Get the hell out of here. Take my car. You've got the explosives; there's an arsenal in there. You two go with him. You've got enough firepower to handle anything now.'
'What about you?' Mark asks.
'Dean, no. No. Go with them. This is your only chance!' Sam realizes what's happening.
'You're not going to get rid of me that easy.'
Rose looks at the brothers. And decides to make the others leave the room. She doesn't go with them but sits outside the door.
'Dean, don't do this. Just get the hell out of here.' Sam pleads.
'No way.'
'Give me my gun and leave.'
Dean's mind is not changing: 'For the last time, Sam. No.'
Slamming the table: 'This is the dumbest thing you've ever done. Dean, I'm sick. It's over for me. It doesn't have to be for you.'
'No?'
'No.' Sam argues: 'You can keep going.'
'Who says I want to?' Dean says, lately, he hasn't been feeling himself not wholly. He is the same as before, but he cannot explain some things he does. He only knows he would never do them otherwise. And what would happen if Sam... doesn't expect him to travel around with Rose and kill monsters with ... her.
Rose enters: 'They're all gone, I mean the infected. The others stayed.' Dean looks at her; he doesn't say anything.
A few hours later, Sam still shows no signs of infection. And they start to leave. Dean and Sam are in their car, and Rose is in hers.
When Rose's phone has a connection, she dials the only person she thinks can help her: 'Hey Damon, how is your search going?'
'Not too good. Do you have something?'
'No, I'm sorry. I was hoping you could help me. Do you remember how Richard died?'
'You don't know?'
'He was killed. I could figure out that much, but I don't know anything more.' She is driving, and she has to take a turn. They are almost there, at a new motel.
'Why ask this now, has this anything to do with the Winchester?'
'Maybe.' Rose signs Sam that she'll come. Dean enters, but Sam waits: 'Are you sure he is dead. You know, not like us?'
'Yes, I'm sure.'
'Ok, thank you.'
The call ends, and she gets out to talk to Sam.
'Was the call about....'
'Yeah, it's not true. I'll explain inside. Dean needs to know. I've been making you keep this secret for too long. ' Rose says: 'I'm sorry.'
'Wait! Why do you think I didn't get infected?'
She turns around: 'I don't know, not really....'
'Do you have a theory?'
'Sam, the only thing I know is that whatever the reason is, or not there is nothing wrong with you.'
Inside, Dean sits at the table.
Rose comes in, followed by Sam. She stands beside the table: 'I will explain it. I promised... and I keep my promises.' She stops talking for a moment. 'My theory was that it wasn't you in the vision.'
'I think my brother can see the difference between me and someone else.' He laughs.
'Not if he is identical to you.' Rose says. She's not ready to see his reaction to the portrait, the same portrait she showed Sam. She lays it on the table, holding onto another one. Sam didn't see that one yet. Dean takes it: 'Ok, this is strange. Why didn't anyone tell me this?'
'I promised I would give her time.' Sam says.
'Why would she need that. This is about me; I need to know this.' Dean states. He is angry, and she gets it. 'Are you sure this is real?'
Rose nods and sits on the chair opposite him: 'I knew him. You don't look like someone from a picture I once saw.' She looks at him: 'His name was Richard Porter. You look identical to the man that was once my husband.' She lays the picture she was holding onto. It's a wedding photo.
It's silent until Dean says: 'Wow, that's... Your....'
He is not identical; Dean is different in so many ways. 'It's why I kept it a secret. Sam found out by accident.'
'She told me about it and how it reminded her of many things she wanted to forget.' Sam says.
'The nightmares?' Dean realizes.
'He wasn't just my ... He killed me. It's how I became a vampire.'
'He turned you?' Dean asks, surprised.
'Not really. I don't think he knew about the vampire part.'
'So, you thought he might have been turned as well?' Sam asks. Dean is looking between the picture and Rose.
'Maybe, Damon says he is sure that it didn't happen. I think he knows who killed Richard.'
'What do you know?' Dean asks.
'The doppelgänger thing?' Rose asks, and Dean nods: 'Not much, but I'll figure it out.'
