After school I was sitting on Flag Green, thumbing my hand-held device, deep into Zenobia X0 when Neel elbowed me, egging me to look up from the screen.
Æsh was standing in the distance next to a silver-haired lady dressed in light-blue linen. She was fussing over his hair. He hunched down, allowing her moments of affection.
"That's probably his grandmother," I said, breaking concentration for a brief moment.
"What's his mix?" asked Neel, transfixed.
"He's 1/6th."
"What's his gene pool? Did you ask?"
"I was going to but he made a quick exit. He was skirting the interrogation. Seems like a dodger and a bolter. Doesn't like talking about himself."
"JJ's next week," said Neel, still entranced.
"Next week," I said. Æsh's grandmother had him in an embrace. Then wagging a finger she kept talking, as though handing out instructions, then she sat in the car, rolled down the window and continued in the same vain. Æsh was nodding his head repeatedly, assuring her of something, it seemed. Then she rolled up the window, the car drove off and she disappeared around the bend of the road.
Æsh started up the hill towards the dining hall. His expression blank, his eyes focused on the ground. His mind in a churn, he was lost to those observing him. Something was eating at him, something insidious, like he was cleaved and bound to the story his insides were whispering to him.
