Camp weekend was over. They fell into their natural hiking factions. Neel shadowed Syrah, in order to witness the seduction of Æsh. Raë fell back, staying to herself.
Through windy peaks and still pockets of the valley heat, past a stretch of jagged hills through the hum of jungle critters, Raë thought of Æsh: his smell, his strength, his fearlessness. She thought of the nape of his neck, glistening with beads of sweat. She thought of the tight slant of his clavicle leading to his chest. The landscape surrounding her - collapsed, all Raë saw was a jigsaw of Æsh's form.
Back in the quad, Neel declared his verdict on Syrah and Æsh. "The absence of evidence is not evidence of absence."
"English please," said Shazia.
"Just because there is no proof that something exists does not mean it does not exist."
"All we're asking is, if there's a chemical reaction or not?" asked Sakura.
Raë bent down, pretending to tie her laces.
"As of now ... I don't know," said Neel.
"You've tailed them for six hours and this is your conclusion?"
Everyone knew Syrah had designs on him. The question was, did Æsh have designs of his own.
