Never Stop Fighting

Here we were, surrounded by the enemy. I couldn't believe I had let it come to this. . . This was my fault.

Fox stood beside me, her beautiful red hair matted into clumps. Her breath heaved, and scarlet blood oozed from a deep gash in her left arm.

As for myself, my injuries were about the same. I still wasn't able to tuck my wings in, even though they were healing steadily. So having a massive pair of black wings behind you during a major battle helped and hurt. I was bleeding heavily in my leg, my lip was split in two places, and I had a black eye, but I refused to quit fighting. My life didn't matter if we succeeded in taking down the Empire.

A man in a black suit stepped forward, grinning like a madman.

"So you think you'll succeed, do you?" He asked with a voice full of mockery.

"That's the plan," I spat back, revealing a devilish grin of my own.

"Mm, it's adorable that you think you're a threat, Little Bird." The man snickers.

"No, what's adorable is that you think I'm afraid of you." I raised an eyebrow for emphasis.

"Look, Little Bird, you can't take us down. You can't, Ginger here can't," -he pointed an accusing finger in Fox's direction. She simply scowled at his nickname for her.- "And neither can anyone else. The Empire will rule . . . Forever!" His voice broke into a yell.

"We'll see about that," I said confidently.

"I'll see to it that it does, Little Bird. And it wasn't smart, bringing leverage with you. She's not important. So therefore, we'll be taking her for now. So then, you'll have nothing left to fight for. We know you don't value your life, Little Bird. If there isn't a reason to fight, what's the point, right?" He explained.

No.

He would never take Fox from me.

But then, that's what the Empire does. They take the ones you love, and they kill them right in front of you. They make it seem like it's your fault. The plan's genius, I must admit.

I had to think on my feet, so I began to pace the floor, mainly for dramatic effect.

"The point, may I be so bold as to correct you, is that very reason. You have the girl I love, and as long as you do, as long as any of you are in power," -I stopped pacing suddenly, staring straight into the eyes of power- "I will never stop fighting." I flashed the men a crooked smile- a smile I hadn't used in a long time.

"Green, Hood, take the girl." The man in the suit barked, obviously angry at my statement.

Two soldiers made a dash for Fox.

I picked up a fallen man's pistol and shot quickly.

There a sharp pain in the part of my back where wing meets skin, and all went blurry. I felt the knife being withdrawn from my back, and I crumpled to the bloody floor.

I heard Fox scream.

I could do nothing but gape, as my vision continued to blur, and the man in the suit took the same knife that had just been inside of me. The soldiers took Fox firmly by the arms, and the man looked at me once more.

"Next time you attempt a revolution, remember your beloved Fox, and think twice." And with that, he plunged the knife into her heart.
