I really tried, I did. I tried so hard to just forget about everything I saw and heard. I wanted to leave everything alone and forget about vampires, especially Luke. I couldn't help it. I just wanted to know more, I wanted to know more about Luke, I wanted to know more about him, about how he thinks, how he lives (or not live I guess). There was just something about him pulling me towards him.
I was too shy to sit next to him at lunch so as Calum talked, I stared at Luke, as non-creepily as I could muster. I was trying to see past the brick wall he put up that blocked his emotions. He held a perfectly blank face. Even when he smiled at something Sabrina was saying, it was almost fake, revealing no emotion behind the smile.
"DUDE!"
I startled when Calum practically shouted in my ear.
"Were you even listening to anything I just said in the past 15 minutes?"
"Uhm, yeah. Something about taking Mia on a date?"
"Maia" Calum corrected.
Now the bell rang, signaling the end of lunch. I felt bad for not listening to Calum. He is such a good friend and I don't appreciate it sometimes. I ran up to Calum and threw my arms around him from behind.
"Wanna hang out after school today?"
"Only if we play FIFA," Calum smirked.
I pouted my lips when Calum turned around from my embrace to look at me. He knows I hate FIFA. Calum gave me a look that I couldn't resist. Plus I figured I kind of owed him for not paying attention at lunch.
"Ugh, fine," I rolled my eyes.
Calum fist pumped the air and jumped dramatically. "I have been waiting for you to play FIFA with me for like, ages!"
I just chuckled at his childlike personality.
Suddenly, I felt a cold pair of hands grab my arm and pull me to the side of the hall. I looked up and saw Luke boring his eyes into mine.
"Why were you staring at me during lunch?"
I widened my eyes when I realized that he caught me. I swear I tried to be discreet. The corner of Luke's mouth twitched to the side and he bit his bottom lip to keep himself from grinning. I melted at the way he bit his lip and my pulse raced. Luke gave up and full on grinned, showing his perfect teeth. I blushed and avoided his gaze. 'Don't fall for him Ashton' I kept repeating in my head. The number of students in the hall were dwindling and I had to get to my next class.
"Oh um, sorry if I made you uncomfortable..."
"I thought it was kind of sweet actually." Luke was still smirking.
"Heh, I gotta head to my next class, so I'll uh, see you around, I guess." I walked towards my next class and tried to bring the redness on my face from tomato to normal.
~~~
"SO WHO WAS THAT IN THE HALLWAY?"
"No one!"
"Well it was obviously someone, unless I'm seeing things, in which I promise you, I'm not crazy."
"Thats exactly something that someone who was crazy would say."
"Oh, for heavens sake Ashton! Why can't you just tell me who it was? OH MY GOSH do you have a secret boyfriend or something? Is it forbidden love? Like Romeo and Juliet?"
"Spoiler alert- Romeo dies."
"I was talking about the forbidden love part."
"Uh-huh"
"Yeah."
"Yeah."
"You never answered my question!"
We were playing FIFA at my house, meanwhile arguing about when I met Luke in the hallway, or more like he pulled me to him, against my will but I didn't mind. I had no idea what I was going to tell Calum. I just kept making smart remarks, but that wasn't going to work for much longer. I can't just be like oh yeah he's a bloodsucking vampire, yeah vampires exist, and no he won't suck my blood, I've only known him for a few days but I completely trust him, yeah. No. It doesn't work like that.
"He's just some guy I ran into." It is kind of the truth, I wasn't really lying.
"That's it?"
"Yeah."
"Well thats boring."
"Sorry..." I said sarcastically.
"Boys! Dinner's ready!" My mom called from downstairs, we got up and I was thankful for the distraction. I knew I had to tell Calum someday, but just not today. We sat at the dinner table with my mom, Harry, and Lauren. My dad wasn't here though abandoned all of us a while ago, I tried not to take it too personally though. I had to be the man of the house but I don't mind. I like feeling close to brother and sister. Although sometimes it was tough when I had to grow up too fast. Making dinner, making sure Lauren and Harry do their homework, picking up all the empty wine bottles that littered the house...
*Flashback*
I flinched as an empty wine bottle smashed against the cream colored wall next to my head. My mother dropped her hands and fell to the floor in a fit of sobs and incomprehensible murmurings. I dashed towards her, I was worried that she would accidently cut herself on the glass. It pained my heart to see her like this.
"Why did he leave? How could he do that to me- to us? He had a whole family! What did I do wrong? I should have- should have-'"
"Mom, you can't change the past," I was now crying too "we need to be strong for Harry and Lauren and get it together".
My mom sniffled. "I'm a mess, aren't i?"
"Come on mom, let's go upstairs." As soon as she hit the sheets, she passed out. After that I went downstairs and spent most of the night cleaning up the mess.
That part of my life is long gone. I only look back is as a long lost, foggy, hazy memory. I try to forget it and move on. My mother got help from a physiatrist and eventually got better. I'm pretty much the only person in my family to remember it. Lauren and Harry were too young and only remember bits and pieces that I wasn't able to conceal from them.
I slurped the last of the spaghetti from my fork. Calum finished eating ages ago and was just leaning back in his chair, waiting for me to finnish.
"Twenty hours later..." He joked. We cleared the table and did the dishes. Calum was as much a part of the household as any of us. Unfortunately for him though, it meant that my mother was perfectly comfortable assigning him chores. So whenever he came over, he tried to sneak in the back door so my mom wouldn't find out. After we were done, Calum made me play FIFA again.
"YAAH! HAHA! I WIN AND YOU LOSE AGAIN!"
"Yeah, yeah, I know I suck at FIFA just let it go Cal."
I had a feeling he wasn't going to let it go.
