Luke’s POV

“Hey Luke, I was just thinking.” Ashton came up to me after lunch.

“Yeah?” I asked.

“Are we ever going to go on that date we talked about?” Ashton peered up at me. His little eyes looked so innocent and beautiful. He gave a questioning smile. I didn’t know what to say back. I couldn’t. I was running out of blood. Fast. I didn’t even know how long I would have before I wouldn’t be able to show up at school. I really didn’t want to put Ashton in danger at all. I couldn’t ask him to go on a date with me tonight or tomorrow because it’s practically the rules that you have to wait. But then if I asked him to go on a date with me this Friday, I would be starving by then and I would risk something happening to Ashton if he got too close.

“I don’t know Ash.” I looked down at the floor. It pained me to break his heart like this. If I could cry, I would have. Maybe this was better. Maybe if I pushed him away now, he wouldn’t get hurt. Then he wouldn’t end up like Jack, buried six feet under. Because of me.

“Oh, Okay.” He whispered. The innocent expression on his face was gone. It was replaced by a mix of hurt and sadness. He readjusted the straps on his backpack and stood taller. I knew it was just a show. He walked away from me. I stayed in the same position. My head bent towards the floor and my eyes closed. I bit my lip ring and leaned against the brick wall. I would never get to be with Ashton again.

Suddenly I felt an incredible pang of hunger and thirst hit my stomach. I doubled over and clutched my stomach. It was starting. The withdrawal process was starting. I didn’t know if this was because of Ashton or hunger. Either way, I was hurt. I felt so lonely in that moment. I was sure I was sure I had lost Ashton and Michael and Sabrina weren’t there for me at the moment. I bit down on my lip too hard and I tasted my own blood. It didn’t do anything but leave me wanting more real blood. I stayed there against the wall, clutching my stomach for some time before the pain finally subsided. For now.

I walked into the classroom. Thank god I didn’t have this class with Ashton. I don’t know what I would have done. I went in and took a seat at the only empty seat which was right next to the kid that always picks his nose at the back of the class. I did notice that Calum was in this class with me. He gave me a funny look before turning back to the front.

“Luke. This is your third check. Thursday detention after school.” Evil Mrs. Benson scolded me.

I just grumbled. I had nothing to lose. It’s not like I’m trying to get into a good college or something. I wouldn’t blend very well anyways. I’ll always look 17. I sank further into my seat. I was just mad at the world today.

When class was over I slung my bag over my shoulder and bolted for the door. I was stopped by someone calling my name. I turned around to see it was Calum.

“Hey.” I didn’t feel like talking to Calum but I didn’t want to be rude.

“Hey. Um, do you like Ashton?” I could tell he was nervous. I could hear his heart  racing and he was fiddling with his fingers,

“Excuse me?” I asked. I wasn’t exactly on ‘talking about crushes’ basis with Calum. The question struck me off guard a bit.

He just looked at me and waited for me to answer his question. His big brown eyes were boring into my head. It looked like if I waited any longer to answer, he might burst.

“I- um, yeah I do. Do you have a problem with that?” I asked.

“No. I just wanted to know. Ashton is my best friend so…” His heart was beating but I didn’t know if it was because he was nervous to ask me or if it was something else. Like if he was lying.

“Yeah.” I nodded my head, Not knowing what else to say to Calum.

“Just, um, be careful with him ok? He’s fragile. He’ll break like china if you don’t handle him properly.”

“I think he’s stronger than that.” I smiled. “But you don’t have to worry about us. We’ll never be together.”

“How come?” Calum asked.

“Things just might not work out…” I gave a vague answer. “Look, I gotta go. See you around Calum.” I walked out the door of the classroom.

~~~
“Michael do you feel it yet?” I asked.
“Nope.” He smirked as if saying ‘haha you’re in pain and I’m not’.
“How come?” I didn’t get how Michael wasn’t feeling the withdrawal yet.
“Where’s your head at Hemmings? Because I drink fresh blood so it makes me stronger. Duh.”
“Oh yeah. Sorry, It’s probably messing with my brain too.” I said to Michael.
“Obviously.” Michael said and I rolled my eyes.
I looked around me. We were in the barn where we did vampire business. We couldn’t do certain things in our apartments. It was mostly for Michael and Sabrina. They couldn’t bring people to feed on to their apartment because of the other people in such close vicinity. It could get…  messy… I try not to involve myself in it. It was also where I stored my blood bags. We call it the blood shack. It was a secret and nobody knew about it. I was laying on one of the tattered couches with my arms folded over my stomach.
“Dude, lets just go eat. We can be really sneaky and we don’t even have to kill anyone, we can just borrow them!” Michael pleaded.
“You know I don’t believe in that.” I glared at him.
“Okay okay, please don’t lecture me.” Michael whined. I had much different views on things than Michael. We could easily get into heated arguments about mindless things but especially the way we get blood. He has told me countless times that I should ‘just go with it’ and that ‘we were created to feed off of humans, so why not’. I don’t like getting blood directly from humans. Especially since the incident.
“Babe I’m starting to hurt too.” Sabrina clutched her stomach and looked at Michael. He rushed over to her and swooped her up with his arms. He walked over to the couch and sat down with her in his lap. He attempted to soothe her but his attempts did nothing to ease the pain.
“Luke. Starving is getting us no where. If the hunters eventually find us, we’ll have no  means of defending ourselves.” Michael pleaded again.
“And if we feed, they’ll definitely find us and easily kill us. They will definitely be watching the blood bags so we can’t get it that way.” I argued.
“I say we just get ourselves a fucking dog and drink that.” Michael grumbled.
I started to reply before a sharp ‘Ah’ escaped Michaels lips. He unwrapped his arms from Sabrina and clutched his own stomach and cursed. He was feeling it too.
“If this is the first stage of withdrawal, what's the next?” Sabrina asked us.
“I don’t know… I’ve never starved before.” I said. I looked to michael but he didn’t know any more than me.
“I gotta go. I got school tomorrow.” I started slowly standing up.
“You’re not seriously considering going to school are you?” Michael gaped.
“I got detention tomorrow. I figured I would survive one more day.”
“Skip detention.” Michael said.
“No.” I replied and left the blood shack. Little did he know, I really just wanted to see Ashton one more time before we left. I decided that we would have to leave town. There was no way of escaping the hunters. Even if they were only here for a bit, we would never survive their stay.
