My breathing had slowed down to a steady rhythm along with my heart. For the first time in days, I felt safe. I felt like I could go to bed without checking under the bed and in the closet, that I could go to the bathroom without looking behind the shower curtain first. Luke made me feel safe but at the same time he gave me a rush of danger and excitement.

“Really?” I asked Luke, to make sure he wasn’t joking or being sarcastic.

Luke nodded his head and had a look of determination on his face. Luke looked really tired. You could tell because he started to make that face that you make when you’re tired. His eyes started blinking quicker than usual, his eyes were watering up, and he was squinting.

“Do you want to come to my room and sleep? If it makes you feel better” Luke asked in a deeper, tired voice. I didn’t know what to say. I mean I wanted to but I didn’t want to seem weird or desperate. Then I realized I was overthinking it.

“Sure.” Luke led me to his room. The inside was *suprise* filled with more books. He used them as nightstands and shelves. But other than that, there were many old records. There was even a record player in the corner, held up on another pile of books. I wondered how Luke even acquired so many books.

Luke stumbled over to his bed and plopped down. He closed his eyes and patted the empty spot in the bed for me to come over. I walked over and climbed into the soft bed. It was silk. For the moment, I completely forgot that he was a vampire. I mean if this is what a monster looks and acts like, then I would have no problem letting them into my world.  But that was unrealistic. There were other vampires out there I knew, that were nothing like Luke. That wouldn’t waste a second to feed off of fresh human blood and drain them until they fall onto the ground with a sickening thump.

I closed my eyes. I couldn’t feel any heat radiating off from luke but I could feel his presence and that was good enough for me. I closed my eyes and fell into a deep sleep.

Luke’s P.O.V

I woke up next to Ashton sleeping. His body was rising up and down after every breath he took. He just looked so peaceful. I didn’t want to wake him up. I felt so guilty for some reason. I let myself get attached just when I told myself that I never would. I didn’t want what happened to Jack happen to Ashton. But for some reason I just didn’t listen to myself when it came to Ashton. My brain was saying ‘stay away from Ashton, it’s not worth it but then my heart is saying ‘go after him!’. It was a constant battle. I can’t imagine the mixed messages I must be sending Ashton. One day i’m yelling at him and the next, I’m inviting him to sleep in my bed.

I got up carefully so I didn’t wake the sleeping boy next to me and walked into the kitchen. Okay, hmm, how do I do this? I wasn’t used to making food. I walked over to the fridge and looked for food. All I found was moldy bread. Are you supposed to put bread in the fridge? I had no clue. I threw away the bread and looked in the freezer. I found some frozen waffles from when I used to have human friends.

“Aha!” I pulled out a pan, put the stove on high and put the waffles on the stove.

“Luke?” I heard Ashton call from the bedroom. I rushed over.

“I’m here Ashton.” Ashton exhaled in relief.

“Did you think I left?”

“Well, I didn’t know” Ashton smiled sheepishly.

“How did you sleep?”

“Great actually, best I’ve slept in days” Ashton smiled.

“Well I’m glad I have that effect on you.” I smirked.
