Luke’s POV.

I walked into detention and sat sulking. I was going to look for Ashton after school and say goodbye to him but he wasn’t to be seen and I had to go to detention before I was late. I crossed my arms and leaned back in my seat. We weren’t allowed to do anything in detention. It was the ultimate detention. We couldn’t even do homework. I sighed and tilted my head towards the ceiling and then the door to detention burst open and Ashton burst in. He was in a rush since he was only about a second from being late for detention. He was half holding, half dragging his backpack in and was so focused on not being late that he didn’t even notice me sitting right behind him.

I leaned forward and tapped him on the shoulder. He instantly turned around to face me, still breathless from rushing into class.

“Hi Ash.” I said.

Ashton have me a wary look as if he was wondering why I was talking to him. “Hi Luke?” Ashton said in a questioning tone.

“What? I can’t talk to you?” I asked. Just on time, I felt a sudden pain in my stomach again. I tried to cover it up but Ashton sensed something.

“Luke are you okay?” He worriedly asked.

“Oh yeah I’m fine.” I managed to hide the pain for that moment.

“Oh… okay then.” Ashton slowly nodded his head but he didn’t seem to believe me.

“Detention starts now! No talking!” The teacher who I didn’t recognize yelled from the desk. Ashton turned around to face the front of the classroom.

After detention was over I attempted talking to Ashton again. I really wanted to talk to him one last time. I had to go and I didn’t want to leave with him hating me.

“Ashton talk to me!” I attempted to keep up with him as he quickly walked away.

“What do you want Luke? You upset me.” Ashton looked sad and it pained me to know I was the cause. “You asked me out on a date and we were doing really well, and I trusted you to come over to my house when I was in a time of need and you just suddenly come up to me and say that you don’t want to go out with me. Why?” Ashton folded his arms over his chest. He stepped closer to me and I stepped away, afraid he would tempt me into feeding on him.

“Because I’m leaving.” It was as close to the truth as I was willing to go with him.

“What?” Ashton asked in shock.

“It’s not safe for us here anymore.” I told him.

“You’re choosing to leave?” Ashton looked hurt.

“I-” I started to explain but Ashton held up a hand.

“I just need to think about this.” He turned around and left me standing the parking lot of the school. I frowned and got in my car to drive to my apartment. Why did he suddenly flip on me like that? Oh well, I guess I have been kind of a jerk.

The pain in my stomach got worse. It was so bad I was swerving on the road. I couldn’t think straight. I sped home in the car as fast as I could, just hoping I wouldn’t see any cops. How inconvenient that would be. I swerved and nearly did a 360 when I landed in the parking lot of my apartment. I I jumped out of my car and rushed to the apartment. As soon as the door shut behind me, I crumpled to the floor. The pain was so strong and it was getting worse.

Suddenly I felt a lurching in my stomach. I felt something rising up my throat. I rushed to the bathroom and puked in the toilet. But since I didn’t eat food all that came up was blood. Lots of it. I sat there and puked blood into the toilet bowl while moaning in pain. So this is what stage two feels like. The smell of blood was making me delirious. But I couldn’t drink the blood I was puking, it would do nothing to quench my thirst, but it could tempt me.
