I controlled my breathing as I raced ahead, hunter and the shifter Emil at my back. I was eager to reach fae lands and find a way to locate Ayla. It had been days and I worried each of them; that I may never see her again
"We must stop. Taylen needs to rest and be fed" Hunter said
Grumbling inwardly I slowed his pace
I wanted Ayala's son to have comfort and whatever he needed, but realistically I knew we would have to find someone trustworthy to care for him
This mission of ours was dangerous and I would sooner die than put her son at risk. Ayla would never forgive me for it yet who could they truly trust. with each passing day the list grew slimmer and slimmer
***************
Weeks later we finally crossed into the border of the fae lands. the glitter of the trees felt like a welcome, soothing balm to Sinik's frayed nerves
The guard met them. No longer lead by the fae prince, for he was now The King
I held up his hands in surrender as they approached, the guys following
Immediately recognizing me, they smiled in greeting
"Commander" . A warrior declared reverently "It is good to see you. You have been missed"
I didn't aknowkdege the statement, time was too important for pleasantries
"We need to see the king urgently"
"Of course right away" the man said noting his serious expression
They led us quickly through the palace halls into the throne room
Inside the room i paced impatiently until Rykell finally appeared looking disheveled and tired. It was barely dawn so I knew he had likely been awoken from sleep
He strode over toward us not even bothering to appear kingly by sitting on the dais
"I assume you have news" he eyed little Taylen snuggled asleep in Hunters arms
"Ayla's .....been taken" Hunter said
He inhaled a sharp breath at Hunter's words; his face twisting in rage
"You were supposed to protect her" he accused looking to me
I bristled offended by his tone
Hating that his words stung with a ring of truth. It was my job to protect her. The former king had tasked me with it . It was the whole reason I left Fae lands, Gave up my duties as commander, Hid amongst the supernatural and lived alongside the dragoons; all to protect Ayla and her son
But now there was more as stake. My heart
"There was an attack on the territory we were staying on. One of your people betrayed us. He led the attack" Hunter spoke up in defend of me
Rykell looked astonished
"One of my own?"
"Yes. Nax" Emil replied
Rykell's eyes widened. His expression filtered between emotion as we all once did. Disbelief, Anger, Rage and then Vengeance
" What is your plan?" He demanded a fierce scowl on his face
"I am requesting a small squad to search and resuce her"
Rykell stared at me for an uncomfortably long moment
"Do you know where she is being held?"
Silence ensued. No one could answer, because no one truthfully knew
