For months Alex Holt woke up with strange dreams in the middle of the night. She couldn't remember exactly how they started or what they were exactly, but she did know that every night for the past three months she woke up in a cold sweat because of them. They were the same every night - a man in a red suit.
She didn't know who he was, or why he was appearing in her dreams. Flashes of lightning flickered behind her eyes at night. Smiles that she couldn't recognize among her own. Meta humans that seemed to be fighting with extraordinary powers and a black and blue suit. Glitter that covered her body - a shimmer of sorts.
Faces that she had no idea who they were but they seemed to know her. Memories that weren't her own but she was seeing them through her eyes. The warm feeling in her chest that reminded her of the one she felt when she was with her mother - love. It all started with the same man in the red suit.
That night Alex had awoke from another one of those crazy dreams. She decided, instead of going back to sleep for another hour to get up and go for a run. It was just past five in the morning and she wanted so dearly to just stay in her bed. Instead, she quietly tip toed through the apartment so she wouldn't wake her brother.
He had just finished his university degree and decided to live with his big sister until he could get up on his own feet. Their mother - who nearly begged them to keep living with her - was glad that the siblings were still together. They grew up together barely being able to be separated. When Alex left for university her brother was devastated.
Four years later Alex moved back to Central City and worked for the richest man in the city: Cisco Ramon. Her boss knew her quite well, she was pretty high up in the company but she mostly minded her own business and he kept out of her way. Cisco knew she was one of the smartest people in the building and he didn't plan to lose money because he got in her way.
She loved her job and the money it brought her. It was enough to support herself, her brother's student loans, and when her mother was ever in need of a little extra cash. Alex worked hard to get where she was and she couldn't be more proud of herself for it. But there was something that she felt as if she couldn't fill.
A hole in her chest had been there for years and she really started to notice it three months ago. No matter how much she tried to fill it, nothing would do the trick. She had tried burying herself in work or agreeing to random hookups at the bar but nothing would change it. She had no idea why she felt that way or how to fix it.
Instead, she ran. Alex ran down the dimly lit streets around her apartment with her headphones placed over her ears. Alex ran and ran until her legs were wobbly and she could barely breathe. For some reason, running seemed to fill the void. She didn't know whether it was because it was the only time that she truly had to think or some unknown reason she would never be able to solve.
By the time that she got back home the sun was up and she was already late for work. She didn't realize how long she had been gone for and more importantly how long she had been in the shower trying to drown the feeling she hated. Either way, by the time she was dressed and driving to work, she knew that she wasn't going to be there on time.
