And Never

"Our sisterly bond?" She scoffed at the idea, "Our 'sisterly bond' has been this way for...years."

He gave a small smile before leaning over and offering her a small sweet.
"If you haven't noticed I've got a big missing sweet tooth!"

She laughed gratefully taking the sweet and thought about what he had said, she truly did care for Elle but things have been so constrained between them. Sera breathed in heavily and looked at the clock, it was still early barely even noon.
While the sounds of nurses going around and people coughing resumed she heard a new delightful sound, she tried to remind herself what it was called but the thought escaped her like a breeze in spring.

"Do you always listen to everything happening?"
She opened her eyes at the question,
"What?"
"You just sat there for about twenty minutes with you're eyes closed listening to this place, do you always do that?"

Rick propped himself up a bit and waited patiently for an answer, Sera had never thought about why she listened to every sound around her before.
"I...I don't know."
"I think you do,"
She looked startled at first and then he continued,
"You're in a sick place surrounded by sick people, surely you'd want to block it out as much as possible?"

"I don't think so, I think it's good to listen and watch what happens, remember every detail I can because if I forget, who would I be? Plus it gives me time, things to think about..."

When she drifted into her own thoughts again she noticed him staring at her, awkwardly she smiled.
"What..?"
"Nothing it's just, you're so deeply in tune with your thoughts and feelings. It's interesting, to say the least, how old are you anyway? You seem to think so maturely."

"28."
"Really!? You look so young! I assumed you were in your early 20's, well I'm still quite young and handsome myself eh?"
She grinned at him barely stifling a laugh,
"Well my young Nightingale, I'm 34!"

He was younger than she thought, he was also really interesting to her.
For some time they spoke with nurses walking in to check on them after a while when suddenly Rick had a visitor, an older man with a rugged look. His clothes may have looked cleaner but his hair was more straw than hair especially compared to Rick,

"R-Rick..."

Tears seemed to swell up in both of their eyes, they were like salt and sugar with completely different taste.
Rick seemed almost taken aback, he finally found his voice and opened his arms. The older man flung himself into his embrace as I watched,

"Sera this is my brother, Henry, this is Sera. My lovely neighbour!"

Henry looked at his gleeful brother and rubbed his head before reaching a handout and shaking Sera's hand saying it was lovely to meet her. He sat unsurely but nearby while Rick whispered,

"Never too late, remember that."
