Regretting

"You will wake up."

The little boy shook his head weakly still playing with her hair, he noticed the needle in her arm and wondered if it hurt. He could feel the sting as he imagined it, a needle that huge in his own arm and felt his eyes water up.

"Pip...do you know what death is?"
"Sera!"
She held up a hand to him and waited, Pip felt his hand quiver while holding a strand of pink hair in his palm.

"I-I don't like that w-word..."
"I know but do you know what it means?"

His little head rocked side to side, while Rick ushered for her not to say anything else but she didn't listen anyway.
"Have you heard of 'heaven'?"
"T-the place with all the a-angels?"
"Yes."
"M-mommy said when a person grows old they close their eyes a-and fly there..."

She bit her lip before speaking as softly as cotton,
"Well, sometimes people who get extremely sick or get hurt really badly also go to heaven and well...I think that's what happened to your mommy..."

He sat there, he barely even blinked. For what seemed like an hour nothing was said and no one moved until he got up and got into his own bed, laying down and rolling onto his side.
She thought about what she said seeing Rick shake his head disapprovingly at her choice, he muttered to her.

"Why would you tell him like that? In fact, why did you tell him at all!? He's just a little boy."

She started undoing the plait,
"It felt like the right thing to do! If he sat here constantly waiting for his mother to finally wake up and get him he would've gotten his hopes up just to have them broken every day!"

They both watched as Pip's shoulders hitched, his face was buried in the pillow and he was curled up.
She didn't know where to begin, she thought about him and how terrifying it would've been to walk in not knowing your own mother was dead and being all alone.

"I'm sorry Pip..."

Rick listened and found himself leaning over slightly and patting her shoulder, he grinned sheepishly afterwards.
"How about we focus on something else, do you think Elle will come today? Also for lunch will you take my mashed peas? I am not a fan of them!"

She tried to smile,
"I hope so, I need to talk to her. Do you think Henry will come? And sure haha."
"I think he will imagine Elle and Henry meeting!"

She tried to picture it and she imagined how it would go, Henry would try to be sweet and Elle would either flick her hair and pay no attention or she would smirk and play around him.
"Hmm, I don't think that'll go so well, to be honest..."

"W-who is Elle and H-Henry?"
Pip turned to face them wiping tears from his cheeks.
