SOMEWHERE BETWEEN LETTING Mariah take the wheel and cranking out Waterfalls, Kai wound up back at home with his best friend by his side and his mind struggling to wrap itself around it all. While he had hoped to see Mariah, he hadn't expected to, especially not in his car while he was high on cookies, but he was beyond euphoric when he got to burst through the front door and call out to Mateo with his grin evident in his words.

"You'll never guess who broke into my car!" he informed with such delight, a post-hangover Mateo couldn't resist frowning as he appeared from the living room. Once he caught sight of Kai happily wrapping an arm around Mariah's shoulders, though, the Ruiz fell into an amazed smile and rushed to properly greet his cousin. The woman had been a part of their lives for the longest time, but for what felt like forever, she had been out of reach, nowhere to be found. Realistically, even being there now was probably a great risk but Kai supposed his impulsive attitude had weaseled its way into her ways of life, as well.

"I'm surprised you two haven't burned the place down yet", Mariah pointed out with an affectionate smile, one that earned a roll of eyes from Mateo while Kai retreated to tug off his leather jacket. "He's high as a kite, by the way. Gonna be a real long night for you", she added, and while at first, Mateo was taken aback by the news, he couldn't help but crack a smile when he turned to Kai and found him yanking his hoodie strings back and forth.

"Ah, we'll get some ice cream and make it a party", he decided out loud, and somehow, those words got the Nolan to snap out of his mindless thoughts and turn to Mariah with widening eyes.

"Oh, dude, wanna know whose co-worker I am?" The grin on Kai's lips was easy to decipher as wicked, and wisely enough, Mariah felt a swing of concern in her stomach as she watched him rub his hands together. "Chloe Decker", he announced dramatically, arms crossing over his chest in satisfaction when Mariah's stern face faded into sheer surprise.

It was no secret that Kai had taken great offense from their first meeting, and understandably so. Even if Chloe hadn't deliberately gone after his biggest weakness, she had taken down a dirty cop all the while tricking Kai onto the stage at the convention for cops. And with someone else's speech forced upon him in front of all those officers, his struggle to smoothly read the prewritten lines had left him a fumbling, blushing mess. Needless to say, when he had come across Chloe and the perp, competitive banter turned into a full-blown argument and he didn't hesitate to take credit for catching the guy by reciting Chloe's intricate plan to his captain as if it was his own.

And, naturally, Mariah had heard all about it, even if she had failed to intervene.

"I mean, there's also this guy who says he's the Devil", Kai thought back to Lucifer with a nervous laugh, "which kinda adds up, because he definitely makes me want to sin."
