MASKING HIS FEELINGS had never been Kai's strong suit, and it was that sincerity that he tried to carry himself through everything. It was that sincerity that had helped Chloe Decker see that he cared for her and encouraged her to confess to feeling the same way. Well, the specific words hadn't been exchanged in that quiet hallway after their first and then second kiss, but it was loud and clear — they liked one another, enough to keep smiling long after Chloe had touched his cheek good night and walked away to get some long-overdue rest.
Kai's lack of filter was also why it was easy for all of his co-workers to pick up on the absolute happiness following him like sunshine as he arrived at the precinct bright and early with coffee for his dearest friends; Lucifer's spiked with something a little extra, naturally, and Ella's full of sugar. Their little group was gathered around Kai's desk, all of them mumbling happily at the Nolan's kind morning greeting.
"What's the occasion?" Charlotte questioned curiously, though the nudge Ella gave Kai suggested they knew exactly why he was in such a good mood. The wink she added was far from sneaky, too, but rather than being offended by the blatant hinting, he broke into a grin that made theirs widen.
Lucifer and Dan exchanged confused looks, but before they could ask a single thing, Chloe was bouncing down the stairs, full of newfound energy despite last night's tragic break-up. By the time she was settling next to Kai with a soft smile and he handed over a cup of coffee, deliberately brushing their fingers together in the process, both of the men nodded in realization and knocked their cups together in silent celebration.
"Better than my brother", Dan simply noted, clearly having heard of the steamy kiss Benjamin had given Kai, though the unamused stare in his eyes was mostly aimed at Lucifer.
Although that made Kai chuckle, he made sure to get his friends' attention with a confident gesture of his hand. "Yes, on that note, I'd like to announce that I am bisexual. And a man. A bisexual man, if you will. And I like a woman and if anyone in this building has a problem with it, I don't really care", he declared before carefully folding an arm around Chloe's shoulder, and albeit hesitantly, she melted into the half-hug with an approving nod.
"That's the spirit!" Lucifer reached out to slap Kai's shoulder proudly. "I believe I speak for all of us when I say, a much better choice than Pierce", he went on, his words inviting awkwardness into the air, yet no one disagreed but rather, nodded in agreement. Of course, they all wanted to be supportive of Chloe and her decisions, but if this was what she wanted... Well, no one protested.
Slowly, their group dispersed until only Kai and Chloe remained, beaming at one another in peace and quiet with neither really knowing what to say. It wasn't uncomfortable like Chloe had expected, but it was admittedly strange — 24 hours ago she had been engaged to their Lieutenant, and now, her ring was gone and she was sharing a morning coffee with the man she had kissed for the first time. A man that, mere months ago, had still been her sworn enemy.
