"LUNCH, AS PROMISED." Those words were like music to Kai's ears, curling his lips high as he looked up from his computer only to find Dan delivering a greasy paper bag onto his desk. It had hardly been Kai's day with Pierce breathing down his neck about a new case, but there was very little that couldn't be fixed with good food — especially when someone else, whether it was Mateo or Dan, was buying it for him.
"This almost makes me want to watch the kid every night", Kai breathed out happily after inhaling the classic smell of proper French fries, a pleased grin on his face as he clutched the bag onto his chest. "Thank you, dude."
Shaking his head, Dan laughed and hoisted his hands up to his hips. "Thank you. Trixie wouldn't stop talking about you all morning. And I hear you and Chlo are getting along better too, huh?" the Espinoza commented with a knowing stare and a gentle fist bump against Kai's arm, earning a huff from the Nolan. While he was happy to hear that he had made a good impression on Trixie, the last part was a conversation he had already had with Ella and Izzy — even Lucifer had chimed in with a few remarks here and there.
"I don't know why you're all so invested", Kai pointed out before unwrapping his cheeseburger and chomping down a generous bite. He wasn't sure if it was the delicious sight or his judging words that made Dan frown, but either way, Kai didn't stop to ask.
Instead, he leaped at the opportunity to change the subject once he noticed Pierce carrying files into his office. "Do you like Pierce? Does anyone?" Kai contemplated with audible frustration, the clench of his jaw a dead giveaway while he gulped down the first half of his hamburger. He was happy to tackle a new case, but less so about Pierce pestering him about it constantly, belittling his abilities in ways that he probably didn't think Kai would notice.
"Oh, absolutely not. The guy sucks", Dan was quick to answer, his words finally getting Kai to turn back to him with widening eyes. He hadn't expected something so straightforward, but the impressed look crossing his face was proof that he was far from disappointed — until Dan went on. "But I guess some do get along with him", he added with a knowing tone, and when Kai turned back to Pierce's office, he found Chloe and the Lieutenant talking.
More importantly, smiling at one another.
Swallowing, Kai faced Dan once more with a lifted eyebrow. "You were married to her, weren't you? You of all people should know how much she cares about her job — she'll even tolerate Broody McGrumpy for the sake of her... whatever the word I was looking for is", he rambled away, an unrecognizable tone of defensiveness carrying each word as he destroyed his lunch fry by fry.
"Whatever you say, man", Dan agreed with his hands lifted in the air to back off, only for something wicked to shine through his eyes, "but if you want to really nail this case, you could probably ask for Charlotte's help."
