KAI COULDN'T BELIEVE that he was yet to visit Izzy, especially when there was a dog involved, but a few days after committing himself to help bullied kids one by one, he was finally standing on the doorstep of the Holt household to bid the woman farewell before her vacation. In his hands rested a plate of warm brownies he had baked just for this occasion, partly to thank Izzy for welcoming him with open arms, partly to impress her mother — it had been the plan all along, but hearing from Lucifer that Diane Holt was something of a legend at the NYPD had certainly intensified the need to please."Just a second!" Izzy's strained voice was muffled from the other side of the door, followed by the sound of excessive security systems being dismantled, from the classic chain to an alert machine ready to notify the authorities if anyone unwanted were to shove their way in. Later rather than sooner, Izzy was finally emerging from indoors, a wacky grin on her lips and three different jackets in her arms. "Which one of these looks the best?"
Pointing at the most colorful one, Kai stepped indoors with his brownies in a careful grasp. "That's some next-level home security", he noted with a worried tone, only for any hint of concern to fade away when he was greeted by a curly Cocker Spaniel whining for attention. With a gasp, Kai held the brownies up with one hand while falling to his knees and happily accepting the dog that didn't hesitate to throw himself over to get all the scratches on his belly. "And this must be the guard dog of the house!" he babbled with a babying voice that he hadn't gotten to use in a while — if you didn't count the several videos he had sent to his sister to show Rutt and Tuke, or the time he had approached a stranger and her dog on the street with very little success.
"Yeah, well, ever since a certain long-legged lawyer hired someone to come after me, I've made some adjustments", Izzy recalled with a sigh that filled the foyer even when she wandered into her bedroom to neatly pack Kai's chosen coat into her color-coded suitcase.
"Oh, right. You're not leaving because of her, are you?" Kai ensured, hoping that she heard the care in his voice even if he failed to get up from the floor just yet.
Appearing in the doorway once again, Izzy shook her head and flashed a reassuring smile at the man whose face was covered in dog drool by now. "Seeing her around the precinct isn't easy but she's... changed. Or, trying, I think. She's kind of a different person than she used to be", she formed the words with uncertainty, and not giving Kai any time to get hung up on it, she continued, "either way, I'm going away with Maze for a few days."
At last, Kai stood up and gave a wide-eyed look to Izzy. "Is that so?" he taunted loudly, a dramatic hum accompanying his pleased smile, and unlike most people, Izzy simply leaned into the suggestive undertones and gave him a promising wink.
"So, I have to ask, what's up with the brownies?" the Holt smoothly changed the subject, and only then remembering the baked goods, Kai's face was lighting up with enthusiasm.
