THE BREAK ROOM in the precinct was filled with laughter as Kai shared the small table with one of the kids from the nearby high school, yet another joke escaping him before he drew a pleased sip from his coffee. Not that many teens had taken advantage of his offer to keep them company if they needed it — yet, anyway — but one girl had shown up during his lunch break, timidly wondering if she could sit down with him. And Kai would never turn a lonely kid away, and so, they had spent the entirety of his break hogging the room that only Dan had bothered to enter for the sake of his pudding.
It hadn't been all teary-eyed confessions about what it was like to be bullied, either. They had bonded over their favorite movies, gushed about dogs and seen who could make the other laugh the hardest, making it easy to spend whatever little time Kai could gather before duty called yet again. It was rarely easy to get a proper break, but every now and then he got lucky, allowing him to sit down either by himself, a fellow officer or one of the kids whose trust he had gained.
The cackling between the mismatched but somehow fitting duo only ceased when someone else entered the room, though as soon as Kai found himself meeting the delighted smile of one Izzy Holt, his hesitance was flying out the door. "Oh, dang! How was your vacay with Lady Leather Pants?" he gasped in recognition as the redhead warily stepped in, clearly reluctant in case she was interrupting something, but the box of donuts in her hands swayed the scales in her favor.
"Hi, sorry for intervening. I do have these if you two happen to be in the mood for some dessert", Izzy announced with a sheepish wave at the girl in Kai's company, and after carefully setting down the pink cardboard box that she encouraged the teen to dig into, she faced Kai with a smile. "My vacation with my girlfriend was awesome. I missed her", the Holt elaborated happily, only to continue when a questioning look landed on Kai's face, "and she'll be following me back to L.A by next week."
Humming with mischief, Kai shoved half a donut into his face before giving Izzy a pleased nod. "I can't wait to meet her", he grinned, but the taunting shade softened when he turned back to the girl he had been getting to know for the past thirty minutes. "This is Izzy, my co-worker. And Izzy, this is—", he began, only for the girl to cut in and insist that she could introduce herself. With that, she was taking the hand of a very impressed Isadora, who shot Kai a mocking version of his own grin.
"I should be heading back to the school now. Lunch is almost over and you do not want to see my math teacher when someone interrupts class", Kai's new friend pointed out before giving him one last smile and thanking him for his time. Once he had tugged her into a warm hug while balancing his donut in one hand and insisted that she could reach out whenever, she was stepping out of the break room and leaving Kai with Izzy.
Silence barely had the time to land in the air when Izzy was smacking her hands against her thighs and giving a nod to the world outside the break room. "Well, you wanna check out what kind of case the others are working on? Ella seemed pretty hyped", the Holt suggested with a wiggle of her eyebrows, and with an agreeing nod, Kai was grabbing one more donut to bring along before hopping out of his seat — the uneven number of pastries earned a cringe from Izzy, however, encouraging her to take one, too.
