DEPENDENT ON COFFEE, Kai Nolan was the type of person you could not get to wake up for good if it wasn't for a steaming mug of caffeine defiled with heaps of sugar and milk. Only second morning in and his coffee habits had horrified his new roommate, who only watched in disgust as Kai sprinkled in more sweetness and raked his fingers through his unruly curls."I can literally feel you judging me", the Nolan pointed out as he stirred his cup and then drew a dramatic, loud sip before giving Mateo a look. Other than the trivial stuff, though, their living arrangements were working out well. Mateo preferred morning showers, whereas Kai liked to unwind under outrageously hot water in the evening, and their eating habits weren't too similar to risk eating one another's leftovers, but not too different to cost too much money. Another plus was how close the apartment was to the precinct, even if it took several tiny streets to get to the right building, meaning Kai was bound to get some of the lefts mixed with the rights, but he'd get the hang of it, eventually.
"As you should", Mateo retorted back with half a smile, "don't forget your keys, Curly Fry", and one nod later, Kai was spotting his childishly decorated keychains by the fridge and stuffing them into the pocket of his leather jacket.
"Alright, well you know what? You—don't forget—", Kai stammered, unsure what to point out, and the smug smirk on Mateo's lips only made it harder to come up with anything clever. "Okay, this is harassment. I'm suing you", he added defiantly before gulping down the rest of his coffee and heading for the front door. Nonetheless, the two men shared knowing smiles, the kind that promised there was no bad blood between them, and with that, Kai was stepping out and welcoming the warm Monday with open arms.
Not quite so talented with time management, at least not when he didn't have Mariah to keep him on his toes, Kai was unsurprisingly late by a few minutes when he stepped into the precinct with an eager grin and gummy worms in his mouth. It seemed that his absence had hardly been noticed, though — the place was full of noise and busy scramming, from newer officers desperately trying to please their superiors with half-spilled drinks, and more experienced detectives walking around in clearly defined groups. It was easy for him to figure out who was associated with who, and while also mentally jotting down potential friends, he picked out the most uptight individuals who would most likely poke holes into his enthusiastic ship.
The one on top of the food chain, however, stood in front of them — Marcus Pierce, his tall, brooding frame easy to spot even with his muscular back directed at Kai, his arms crossed and a sense of authority floating around him. Although Kai didn't always perform well under the scrutinizing eye of his bosses — not necessarily by nature, but by choice — he remained calm and unfazed while stepping over to the Lieutenant.
Though admittedly, it had been a while since he had had a first day anywhere, but the confidence he had in his work left him untouched by the scurrying and the mild chaos around them.
