HEADS WERE TURNED when Kai set foot in the precinct. He hadn't been fired — luckily — but it was safe to say, rumors spread like wildfires and no one had expected to see the man whose mangled face matched Pierce's and whose fingertips were still pale red from Charlotte's blood. But those were the two exact reasons why he was there, defiance shining on the literal shiner swelling the corner of his eye as he strode in by Lucifer's side, zero hesitation in skipping over to the Lieutenant's office.

"Oh, Nolan", Pierce addressed him calmly, barely batting an eye at his unprompted arrival. "I thought you'd be taking the day off. Understandable after what you've gone through", he continued, patronizing and so irrationally collected, Kai was already itching to leap at his throat. Looking into the eyes of Charlotte's killer hurt — regardless of the victim, it felt wrong to just stand there and let him be.

Nevertheless, he and Lucifer had been tasked with keeping Pierce distracted while Chloe, Dan, and Ella piled on the evidence against him, and so, Kai swallowed down his anger. They were doing this for Charlotte and justice, and he had let his fury blind him last night. He wasn't going to ruin the Richards' final chance at peace just for one undoubtedly delicious punch.

"Sit down", Lucifer ordered after announcing they were onto Pierce, "or I'll make you." Kai had never seen him so pushed over the edge, either, but he didn't blame him. They were all struggling.

It was a bittersweet victory to see Pierce slowly sink into the chair though, with the lights above him perfectly illuminating the litany of bruises Kai had inflicted on him. He couldn't hide the proud smirk as the Lieutenant's purple eye and swollen lip caught his stare, and mimicking Kai's expression, Lucifer took a long gander at him.

"Get into a fight recently, eh?" he taunted, pleased even if Pierce simply dismissed the remark with a huff.

"What do you two want, hm? I have paperwork to do, you know", he sighed, as if bored by their little intimidation, and effortlessly like that, he was getting Kai riled up again. He was always impulsive in nature, but rarely so violent — it seemed Marcus just brought out that side in him, the one that yearned for retribution at any cost.

"How about my transfer, huh? How did you know about me and Chloe?" Kai demanded, arms folded his arms over his chest and leaned against the wall while Lucifer seated himself on a chair opposite Pierce's.

His question earned a laugh from the Lieutenant, clearly satisfied he had gotten under Kai's skin. "Your old partner. She was transferred here and although she's been undercover this whole time, one look at her file brought me to you", Pierce began, and already tensing at the mention of Mariah, Kai narrowed his eyes at the man. "And when I looked into you, it was easy to find all the details on that convention you met Decker at. I needed something to tear this team apart and you... fit the role perfectly", he went on, and despite the straight face Kai tried to maintain, he couldn't deny the sting.
