BUSINESS AS USUAL. That was how Kai had described his life for the past days whenever asked, always insisting there was nothing out of the ordinary in his usually eventful day-to-day routines — or the lack of any, more precisely. And sure, he clocked in and out of work a little off schedule as always, and sure, he had made his usual casual visits to Lux, cooked with Mateo and walked his dogs.

Business as usual.

But underneath the surface, he was harboring an ember of defiant hope and purpose. After running into Maze at the parking lot, he had been on high alert, always keeping an eye on Pierce's office in case the demon were to wander in without a solid reasoning. Her visits had been infrequent, but enough to convince him she wasn't there about Izzy any longer, and whatever it was, he was determined to figure out. Not only for the Holt's sake but for his own tiny selfish agenda of needing some dirt on Pierce.

On the flip side, that meant having to pay attention to every soft smile Chloe lit up the room with, every brief touch of hands as they lunched together or plotted taking down criminals together. The Decker rarely ever asked for Kai's help anymore, and while he did have his own cases to tackle — some of which were actual work, not just Pierce's flimsy leftovers — it stung a little to be excluded from the group, just like he had been at the beginning of his arrival.

Once Chloe was emerging from the Lieutenant's office to resume her work, Kai took it as a sign to claim his well-deserved break. Before the woman could slip through his fingertips, he was rolling his chair to the center of the bullpen, a charming grin plastered on his face as he flicked open the box of donuts he had gotten just for this reason. Granted, he had already treated himself to more than a few, but crawling back to Chloe's good graces had been the main idea rather than his insatiable sweet tooth.

"A donut hole for my favorite—uh—I'm not sure where I was going with that but here you go!" he cleared his throat awkwardly, urging Chloe to take one with a gesture of his free hand. It was strange to go out of his way just to please someone — he made friends easily, and on the off chance that he didn't, it was usually for good reason; people he didn't need or want by his side. But to have someone like Chloe, interesting and important to him yet completely unbothered by Kai's existence, it was new and weird and he didn't like it one bit.

With an uneasy smile, Chloe obliged and grabbed a glazed donut before tilting her head in a silent thank you. "I guess this is you stepping in for Izzy", she noted, all of them painfully aware of the Holt's absence in the precinct, and while he appreciated the sentiment of taking over Izzy's duties as the office sweetheart, he shook his head.

"This is me trying to apologize for being a dick. It's not my place to... well, do or say anything. Whatever is between you and Pierce is your business only and I promise, I'm all support from now on", he elaborated with a voice that sounded so true. Deep down, he was pushing as hard as he could to steer away from the bitter half of his heart, far from okay with watching the woman he had grown so inexplicably fond of parade around with his enemy. But rather than going off on how stabbed in the chest he felt with every lovelorn look exchanged between the two, he renewed a smile and nodded to confirm his own words.
