KAI MISSED MARIAH more often than not — she was his best friend, after all, but that cruel feeling really sank in when he was seated on his bed, phone in his hands but the thought of calling her so far away. Her number was right there, but he knew that trying it out could put her undercover role in the crosshairs, and that was a risk he didn't like taking. But with his jean jacket still on and reminding him of the night he had had, he was unable to stop thinking about the strange thought that crossed his mind for a split second — how he had been taken aback by Chloe's, well, everything. For a moment there, he had admired the sight in front of his eyes and that wasn't an idea that sat too well with him.
They were rivals, weren't they? Sure, they were both detectives but they didn't stand eye to eye, that was the entire basis of their odd relationship. She had screwed him over once upon a time, and he had taken credit for her case.
Then again, they had had one hopeful night in Lucifer's penthouse, board games uniting them in something other than resentment.
"Hey, Curly Fry", Mateo's voice startled Kai out of his thoughts, and on instinct, he locked his phone and turned on his bed to find the Ruiz leaning against the doorway. "I can hear you overthinking across the apartment. Feel like ordering pizza?" he inquired softly, and with similar gentleness, Kai threw his legs onto the mattress and crawled across the bed so he was facing Mateo rather than the wall.
"No", he muttered, but the word had barely hung in the air when he had continued, "I'm just being dramatic. Obviously yes to the pizza."
Instead of walking out to call their favorite pizza place, Mateo stepped further into the room and reached out with his leg to carefully kick Kai's foot. "What's got you down, huh?" he wondered with a doting tone, earning an unamused stare from Kai, only for the annoyance on his features to be wiped away with fondness when Mateo collapsed next to him.
"Do you think it's possible to find someone you don't like beautiful? With nothing more to it", Kai huffed out before falling onto the mattress next to Mateo, both of them staring at the bleak ceiling while thinking about the man's complicated question. Or, at least he thought it was complicated. Mateo, apparently, did not.
"Oh, absolutely. Don't people always say looks can be deceiving? Someone breathtaking can be an awful person", he settled simply, but the answer didn't exactly satisfy Kai. He fell into a frown and hummed quietly — that didn't really fit Chloe, either. She wasn't an awful person, just irritating. But even her flaws originally stemmed from how ambitious and hard-working she was.
"Oh, god", Kai muttered out loud, unsure where along the road he had wound up justifying all that Chloe was, defending her to himself, no less. "No offense, but I wish I could talk to Mariah about this", he added with a quick look given to Mateo, who barked out a laugh but couldn't resist a nod.
