KAI WAS EQUALLY revitalized and dumbfounded by his session with Linda, his jittery energy oozing out of him in rapid steps and cheery high-fives at everyone who crossed him on the way from the elevator to his desk. He had been glad to have a later shift, allowing him to sleep in and fully enjoy Mateo's waffles before deciding that the best way to tackle his curious thoughts was head-on.

At the very least, that had been the plan, but there was only so much strain his optimism could take.

"Nolan, you're late", Pierce was following him to his desk with a snappy tone — then again, that was his regular tone, and so, Kai fought back a roll of eyes when he turned to the Lieutenant with a pursed smile.

"Only by five minutes", he defended himself with a gesture at his wrist before flashing a widening grin at the man, "hey, how about we get a drink later, huh? Get this friendship on the mend as the kids say?" He threw in a fist bump, one that Pierce ignored with a curt nod at the wrist Kai had been gesturing at.

"You're not wearing a watch", he noted bluntly, his hands rising to his hips as he seemed to chew on Kai's proposal, only to settle for a typical, grim face. "And I'm good. We're working on a case tonight", he elaborated, vague as ever, but Kai was more than alright with doing all the talking if necessary.

"We? I didn't realize the Lieutenant was so... hands-on", he commented, utterly oblivious to how much he was going to regret his wording in a second.

Chuckling for what had to be the first time ever, Pierce shrugged and nodded across the room, though the dry smile on his lips suggested Kai already knew whose desk he would find. "This is a personal one. Someone's copying a murderer I caught once. Not that you need the details, really, but Decker and I are pretending to be a couple to lure out the killer", he explained, dampening Kai's smile with his own delight on the matter. No doubt, seeing the... well, doubt wash over the Nolan's face only sweetened the deal.

"Hey, that's great. You, uh, both... need to loosen up for once", Kai heard his own voice but didn't quite realize the words had left his mouth until Pierce was nodding in agreement and stepping away to leave the Nolan stewing in his own thoughts. He didn't know which was worse, recognizing the bitter burn in his chest at the idea of Chloe dining and drinking with Pierce, or knowing there was nothing he could do about it.

Nothing worthwhile, at least. But that didn't stop him from letting his emotions wash his common sense away.

"Decker, you can't seriously be going out with the Lieutenant?" The disbelief in his voice was evident as he trekked over to Chloe's desk, his eyebrows knitted together in reluctance and his arms crossing over his chest. In the same kind of retaliation, Chloe mimicked him, though the annoyance radiating off of her was far more determined and impenetrable.

"Not that it involves you in any way, but it's for a case. Regardless, I don't think I need to consult you before I agree to a date", she pointed out, all too correct for Kai's liking, earning a defeated huff from him as he untangled his arms and stepped closer with an exasperated stare.
