IF THERE WAS any place that Kai felt at ease in, it was the interrogation room. Accepting Los Angeles as his new home had been gradual and difficult, but it was times like these — him in charge in the chilly room, his suspect seated across the metal desk — that he was comfortable. That wasn't to say that it was always easy getting the interrogated people to crack, but it was, either way, an opportunity for him to put his skills to good use. Writing reports wasn't his strong suit, but when it came to coaxing confessions or useful tips out, he knew exactly what he was doing. He felt good enough, capable, successful.

And it was an added plus that keeping himself busy kept him from thinking about the other parts of his life.

"I can go on as long as you'd like", he pointed out knowingly as the silent suspect stared right past him and at the observation mirror on the wall. "Did you know that if I had sex with a man today, I wouldn't be allowed to donate blood for three months? In some countries, I'd have to wait a whole year! Sounds pretty discriminatory to me, right?" he continued rambling, utterly nonchalant as he hoped to wear the suspect down with all the useful facts he had read about.

When another bout of silence sucked the sound out of the room and the man opposite Kai refused to budge, he shrugged to promise there was more to come. "Well, did you know that some people might not be allowed to rent an apartment or get a loan or be allowed into bars because of their sexuality? Of course, it's not allowed—"

"Fine, fine, I'll tell you what happened!" The suspect finally caved in, the despair and frustration evident in his tone as he threw out his arms and glared at Kai, who, in turn, grinned proudly.

Not much later, a written confession was in his backpocket and he could seal the case before wandering into the locker room and seating himself on one of the benches with a relieved sigh. A mere second was all it took for the relief to be washed away with something more strenuous, the high of a success fading into the background as he rested his head against the row of lockers and closed his eyes for a moment. Paperwork could wait for him to catch his breath, anyway.

"Everything alright?" Another voice was speaking up from across the room, and surprised, Kai jumped on the bench and opened his eyes wide while scanning his surroundings. The alertness melted away as soon as he found Dan peeking from behind the other set of lockers, an amused bud of a smile on his lips as he chewed on a power bar and observed Kai's uncharacteristically peaceful figure.

With a choked laugh, the Nolan nodded. "Yeah. You know that great feeling when you solve a case? And then the kind of a... flat feeling afterwards?" he inquired, but before Dan could say a thing, he was sitting up properly and shrugging. "I mean, it passes pretty quickly. At least I get excited about the idea of future cases. And at the end of the day I'm still happy with the work I've done, but there's that tiny gap that allows just everything else to flood your thoughts."
