The world didn't end in a bang, or even a whisper, but rather one cruel scream at a time. They tried to protect us. But they all failed. Except for one. My protector. He died so I could run, run and hide. And I did, or I tried. She found me. She found me and soon I will be remembered with the others. The others who have failed so miserably. There's no point in explaining anything. It's not like anyone will read this- but he gave me one command, one thing to do- so let it be written. And if you are reading this, if you've gone so far as to find where this is, go back. Go back before its too late. Then again it's probably already too late.

It was Christmas eve. We never celebrated it, though. While every other person in the world got ready to dunk their gingerbread cookies with their intricate details in warm milk, I was stuck in a conversation about the end of the world with a cat. And Zinzan wasn't the nice type of cat- the kind you see running about the streets. He looked as if he'd been on the losing side of a war, his ears mismatched and patches of fur either missing or each in its foul colour. It would take a great amount of courage, effort and skill to clean a cat like him. But I can't go around talking about him like that all day. He did save my life twice. We were the only ones who knew about...her. Two days until the mass destruction of the entire world. And there was nothing we could do to stop it. Those who will be lucky enough to survive it will have enough sense to give up. We didn't know how she was going to do it, but we knew why, and it was a reason to stand for.We both agreed to flee. It may have seemed cowardly, but it's not like a teenager and a cat could save the world- this isn't a fairytale, need not I remind you. I snuck him into my backpack, a pile of things I'd wrapped in cloth and the remaining antidotes we had recovered from our recent pharmacy raid. I dunked them in and ran, ran like my life depended on it. Which it did, I guess.
"Dylan, take the next train to the edge of town- a short walk from there is the perfect place to hide out..." Zinzan whispered in my ear, slipping his head back into my bag as quick as he had got it out. I stopped, dazzled by the lights hung in tiers, the flickering tree covered with ribbons and gold trinkets, each of its branches chaotic yet orderly. It was the tree the town so carefully decorated each year."Ahem," Zinzan said, voice muffled. "keep moving."
I kicked a stone and continued. Children ran around me squealing with gifts and candy in their hands. People laughing, holding hands, smiling. This was the last time they'd enjoy anything with such delight before the news would be brought out that the human race had a day left to live. The exact reason why Zinzan suggested we leave early- a headstart from the turmoil to come. I'd never have known how much chaos could be wreaked in a day.
