We plunged into the fog, sounds drowning the farther we descended. I could barely see Cody as he fell by my side. All sounds around us drowned. It felt as if we'd been dropping for eternity. Then the fog thinned. As it almost completely cleared away, I saw the ground we were about to fall on. Reality hit me, and I realized we'd go splat from the impact of our landing. I screamed- what else could I do? It wasn't like a miracle would save us. But again, I spoke too soon. Inches away from collision, we came to a halt. I turned to see a buff guy holding me up by the scruff of my shirt. Don't ask me how I didn't see him on my way down, or why he didn't just catch me and spare the damage to my shirt, because I still don't understand that either. Cody was in a similar situation, but the man had caught him instead (look whose shirt isn't going to have to be stitched up again). Brianna was struggling in the muscular hands of another man, kicking violently.
Then the man dropped me. The ground smouldered and sent up a disorientating haze. the place was burning. Even in the slight shade of nearby cliffs, the heat still lingered. I was expecting a cooler area, from the fog we encountered in our plummet. One of the men grabbed my bag, snapping their fingers at me to get my attention.
"Hey," One of them grunted. "This yours?"
No, just carrying it for a hobo I found on the street the other day, I stopped myself from saying, and nodded. I stood up, dusting myself, but another man jerked me back down. Now these guys were getting on my nerves. The guy dumped all my stuff out, carelessly. He searched through the pile, then glanced at the name tag stitched on my bag, which I'd foolishly signed about four years ago.
"So your Dylan?" He asked as if a threat.
"No, I'm Beyonce, Nice to meet you," I said finally.
"Your handwriting sucks by the way," He added, ignoring what I'd said, and continuing to examine the nametag.
"Thanks," I said sarcastically.
"HEY! A woman shouted from behind. She was struggling to capture Brianna, who was running towards me now.
"Run!" She called. And so I did, followed by Cody.
Then I ran into a giant snake.
