I could see him more clearly as he came nearer, the fire illuminating parts of him. He was rather skinny, wearing an oversized red t-shirt, dark hair matted, the tip of his nose painted red from the cold. Something in me told me to trust him, but I couldn't. You could never trust anyone, especially at times like this. I carefully edged back, not lowering my safety scissors, and started to kick Zinzan gently. He snarled, turning over, eyes open. I jerked my head towards the kid. The filthy cat rolled to its all fours, prowling towards the boy. Then he started sniffing him- yes, sniffing. Zinzan had a thing for that. He could tell good apart from bad through smell, but I'm pretty sure he was just checking if the kid had some bacon or something on him.
I waited for Zinzan to say something, but he just sat obediently in front of the boy, who looked uneasy.
"Who are you, boy?" Zinzan asked.
The boy's green eyes went wide, almost gasping.
"You-"
"Yes, I can talk, now tell me, who are you," He ordered.
"C-Cody," he replied.
"How did you get here?"
Cody went silent.
"I- I was with my sister...we got attacked and she told me to run, so I did. But that was about two weeks ago."
"You've been running for two weeks?" I asked.
"I've been hiding for two weeks." he corrected."Well, if you've survived two weeks alone, you can survive another day alone," Zinzan said, turning to walk.
"What- Zinzan!" I said, catching up to him.
"We have to take him- he's just a kid!" I protested, making sure Cody couldn't hear.
"I'm not risking my life for him," Zinzan snapped.
"Both of our lives are already at risk- everyone's life is!" I pointed out.
"Well then it won't matter, will it?" He said flatly.
"What difference will it make?" I asked.
"Fine," He said, stopping. "If you want to stay with him then stay. I'm not staying to get killed by her." He said, turning.
I couldn't believe how he could be like that- but he had a point. We had to keep moving. I mouthed a sorry to Cody as I grabbed my bag and followed Zinzan. He stood behind the fire, his heavy look disappearing as we gained distance from him.
