I felt the water crushing me the deeper I fell in. I kicked to get up for air. I couldn't keep my eyes open under the water, and they twitched and shut every time I tried. I rose, gasping in large, shallow breaths for air. My hair was plastered onto my forehead, my clothes clinging to my skin. "ZINZAN!" I called out before my head sunk back into the water. I spat out the water I'd swallowed, hollering out again, "ZINZAN!". My voice felt worse the louder I shouted. I hugged my backpack, knowing its content was soaked by now, but the antidotes and medicine could still be useful. I felt something pull me up by the back of my shirt. I turned to see it was a girl- hair soaked, like mine, plastered around her neck. She was gasping for air. She pulled me on to the tall tree she was on, then rested on her hands.
"Your welcome," The girl said, still heaving for air.
"I-thanks," I said, panting as well. "Who- are-"
"Brianna." She said, breath restored.
"I'm Dylan. How'd you-"
"I was running from these people who attacked me, then the wave came in and...yeah."
"Wait," I said, trying to put two and two together. "Are you-"
I was cut off by the bellow of thunder and a crackle of lightning in the distance. The waves seemed slightly calmer, and debris had departed in different ways.
"So how did you get here?" Brianna asked.
"Long story. Well...not really that long if you don't want the backstory. Me and this...cat were running away from...someone," I said simply.
"Cat? Your cat? I'm more of a dog person-"
"Not just a cat...like I said, it's a long story." I stopped, staring into the distance. "And I don't think we have time for it," Then we turned, staring at the giant whirlpool of water before us.
