Chapter 26: Getting to know the family (part 2)

I wrote this quickly because so many of you asked me to update! I also had an extreme urge to write today so here is the new awaited chapter! Please read the AN at the end (:

An uncomfortable silence fell upon the two brothers. I put my hand on Jasper's back, gently coercing him to walk down the rest of the stairs.

Jason walked back in the kitchen to sit with Lora, leaving the three of us alone.

"You've grown." Thomas blurted, smiling like a proud father. That smile slipped when he saw the cold stare he was receiving.

I cleared my throat and his cool gray eyes snapped to mine. He smiled again and extended his hand, which I awkwardly shook.

"Gosh Jas, do you always have to get the pretty ones? What's your name, sweetheart?"

At this remark, Jasper glared at his brother as he slid his arm over my shoulders and brought me into his side.

I almost laughed at how similar they were, but stopped myself and just replied with the answer he was looking for.

"How'd you find me here?" Jasper bit out, his cold façade never changing.

"I called your phone again and the guy who let me in answered. Jason, was it?"

I nodded in reply and he continued.

"Well, I told him you left something at my house and I had to bring it over. He gave me the address and tada, here I am."

"Your brother is an idiot." Jasper muttered, his gaze dropping to the floor.

"Oh, come on Jasper, seeing me isn't that difficult." Tom said exasperated as we made our way into the living room. Jasper stopped short and stared at him.

"Are you fucking serious."

He said it so monotone but so deadly that it sent shivers down my spine.
Thomas rolled his eyes, and that was when I realized that he saw this as a way for a teenager to overreact and rebel. I got a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach and Jasper continued,

"Do you honestly think this is easy for me? To see the brother who abandoned me?"

Thomas opened his mouth to cut in but Jasper talked over him, "do you remember Tommy? The first time he hit us? What about the first time he raped me, could you hear me crying, begging for him to stop?"

Jasper was breathing heavily but his brother was as still as a statue, his eyes glazing over.

"Yes."

It was one word, so simple and so quietly said, but it completely set Jasper off. He grabbed Tom's collar and shoved him into the wall.

"Fuck you. Fuck you."

"You don't understand Jasper!" Thomas yelled, this being the first time he's raised his voice since he arrived, "it was so hard on me to walk out on you and Lora but you don't understand that I had to! He did the exact same things to me, and no, I'm not trying to make that an excuse, but I just couldn't take it anymore. I had to get out, I just had to."

"Why the hell didn't you take us with you?" Jasper argued, his voice rising to match his brother's.

"Jas?" A meek voice spoke up, cutting of whatever the other brother was about to say.

Jasper quickly let go of his brother, who was staring at his sister in awe.

Lora, unaware of the fact that the man standing before her was her brother, looked at him in confusion.

"Who are you?" She asked innocently.

Thomas' face dropped and Jasper laughed bitterly, "you honestly thought she'd remember you? She was only three when you left, asshole. And don't think you're going to get the chance to be her big brother now, that's my job."

I had been standing quietly, watching this whole thing unfold, but I chose that moment to step in. I finally caught Jasper's gaze and narrowed my eyes, "can I talk to you for a minute?"

He gave me a look but wordlessly followed me back into the hallway.

"You might not want to have a relationship with him, which is understandable, but don't take the opportunity away from her. You've sheltered her from her family all her life, hell, you've had to. But there's no danger here anymore Jas, so loosen up and let her choose."

Jasper was silent for a few moments, "there is danger Sam, he could leave again. She doesn't deserve to be hurt like that."

"No, she doesn't, but she still should know that man in there is her brother, not a stranger. And let me ask you this, are you really afraid of her getting hurt, or are you afraid of yourself getting hurt again?"

The silence that met my words gave me my answer, I nodded to myself and nudged him back towards the living room.

"Work this out Jasper because family is the most important thing to have, even when it's broken and you're forced to fix it piece by piece."

He was quiet for a moment, then grabbed my hand and gave it a squeeze, "Im scared Sam." he admitted quietly, looking anywhere but at me. I squeezed his hand back and brought my other hand up to caress his cheek.

"I know," I replied just as quietly, "but you can do this Jasper, don't let your fear control you."

"How did you do it?" He asked, catching me off guard.

"Do what?"

"Get over what happened to you so easily?"

I froze, he was talking about me being raped at fourteen. I cleared my throat and shifted uncomfortably, "I didn't. I mean, well, I don't know. The memories, they never go away. You'll always be stuck with them. I guess I just learned to cope with them, once you're with your demons for so long, you tend to get used to them, you know? But that doesn't mean you have to give them the power to control you."

I cleared my throat and looked back up to meet his eyes. He was giving me a sad smile, "yeah," he said, "I know. And thank you, I needed to hear that."

He looked back over his shoulder in the direction of the living room. With one last deep breath, he turned around and went to face the person thats been haunting him for years; his brother.

Jaspers POV

I walked back into the living room, Sam's courage guiding me to stand before my brother. Tom was crouched down before Lora but stood when I came to a stop infront of him.

"Lora," I said, my eyes never leaving my brothers, "this is Tommy, your brother."

Woah, two updates in a row? Crazy, I know! You guys deserve it though, it's been much too long. Not only that but this book was only at about 7.9 thousand reads and now it has 10 thousand.. Im absolutely speechless right now. You guys are the best!

Also, Im going to (hopefully) be editing my books because the grammar in them hurts and I was such a terrible writer lol but thank you so much for sticking with me through everything. I hope you like the new covers, they're simple but I think they're sorta cute (:

What do you think about Thomas? Does he deserve a chance to get to know his brother and sister again?
