Three hours of driving had passed and my eyes were beginning to close. I knew I was tired but I guess I didn't realize how tired I actually was.

"Hey, do you want me to drive now?" Lilly sat up and looked over at me. I nodded my head without speaking and then pulled into an exit lane. We needed gas anyway. I'm not sure how we were going to pay for it, but we'd have to get some if it meant survival.

As I pulled into the gas station parking lot, Lilly started fumbling and searching around the car. "What are you looking for?" I asked.

"Every good driver has change somewhere," she kept looking and looking. She dug into the middle compartment, pulling out miscellaneous items until she pulled out a large black coin purse. She looked at it with satisfaction. Lilly opened the purse and started counting.

"Two dollars and twenty-six cents,"

I snorted. "That'll get us, what? A gallon and a half?" I pulled into a parking space and turned off the car. I looked at the gas station. It was old and ratty, with chipped paint and flickering LED lights that said "OPEN." We were really lost in the middle of nowhere.

"No, maybe it's all we need," she said and I looked at her confused. Did she bang her head too hard. How could that possibly be all that we need? But then she pointed to a payphone on the outside right corner of the little shack and I smiled. For once I was happy that Gabriel made me memorize his number.

"Here I got it," I held out my hand and Lilly handed me the change. "I'll keep a lookout," she said. I nodded and then exited the car. I limped over to the payphone, as my leg still hadn't healed properly from lack of sleep and food, but I got where I needed to be.

I slid $1.25 into the coin slot on the machine and dialed Gabriel's number. I really hoped he picked up because we didn't have enough money for a second call and if he did pick up the timer only gave me five minutes. I had to practice what I was going to say.
