The sky was bright and blue and Adam had already packed things up. I knew I had fallen asleep when I saw that everything was tidy now, the fire had been put out, and Adam was looking at me with a bag slung over his shoulders.
"C'mon. Let's go find your girl." He smiled and helped me up.
I threw my backpack on my back and we headed out of his small camp together.
"So... what's this girl like?" He asked.
"Gorgeous. Absolutely stunning. She's smart... happy... and she gives good advice." I signed shortly, reminiscing every amazing memory with her.
"She sounds amazing." He spoke and trailed off before picking back up. "I used to have a... partner. My group threw her out some time back... now I don't know if she's dead or- I'm sorry." Adam choked up.
"I get it. I bet she's alright, she's gotta be somewhere." I signed back to him, hoping my little bit of encouragement would get him past the moment.
"Tell me more about your girl." He replied with another sniffle.
"Well, her name is Clementine. She's pretty short... and she's got beautiful eyes. Her voice make everything seem better in seconds not even mentioning her advice giving abilities." I chuckled lightly before getting lost in thought of how dearly I missed my Clementine. "Aj is the most wonderful boy I've ever met."
"Who's Aj?" He asked, intrigued by the new addition to my story.
"Aj is like... her adopted son. He's still young. But good." I replied with a tinge of happiness before my face fell, realizing I'd just left him too.
"Sounds like they're great people." Adam smiled again.
Our conversation had once again fallen short. As we walked in silence with only the sound of crunching leaves and breaking branches under our feet, our senses had become hypersensitive of our surroundings; our very eerie and off-putting surroundings.
"So, do you remember anything about how far you might've ran, any landmarks? Specific rocks or trees we can find?" He asked.
"A highway." I simply replied as my eyes focused ahead of me.
"A highway... we're about 10 minutes walking distance and from there... if we can find it, maybe you can help lead me the rest of the way back to your school?" He smiled at me with hope for me in his eyes.
I nodded my head yes and we continued through the forest.
About ten minutes into our journey with short yes or no questions flying and branches continuing to break under our feet, we finally spotted the guard rail that was normally on the sides of highways and we both picked up our pace.
As we flung our legs over the thin metal rail, I scouted the cars that were now weirdly scattered about. Things were carelessly tossed out and thrown onto the ground. In caution, I warned Adam to try to stay behind a car at all times, at least until we got to the other side of the small road.
As I dodged behind cars and other vehicles, I did my best to look up and down the street without making my appearance known. I saw a little speck of something moving; most likely a human. Dead or alive was the question.
I quickly motioned for Adam to hurry up and as our feet were out of view from the road, we stopped to catch our breath and account for everything that we'd begun our travel with.
As we sat on rocks, catching our breaths and patting ourselves down, I recounted the incident before I left the school.
Hitting Aasim, knocking him down to get away from the gates. Leaving everyone just to try and die by myself. It was a stupid and cowardly thing to do. I was weak and I did in fact show it. Aasim was right.
