The Hera

Chapter 11

Out the Darkness and Into the Light

Thorin looked over at my pained face and using all his strength he pushed away from the wooden beam that allowed him to climb off of me and out of the rubble before he hooked his hands under my arms and hoisted me out of the wreckage that laid waste on top of us.

"Thank you, Thorin," I say with shortness of breath.

"You are very welcome Araya. Are you okay?" He responded with a worried look on his face.

"Of course. Are you?"

"Yes." He smiles softly then goes over to help the others. I get a warm fuzzy feeling in the stomach and I giggle to myself.

"Gandalf!" Yelled Kili as he pointed to the mountain wall.

We all turned and looked to where he was pointing and saw a swarm of goblins that were scaling the wall at an alarming speed and we are heading straight towards us. We quickly hauled the others from the rubble and onto their feet.

"There's too many we can't find them!" shouted Dwalin as he helped a dazed looking Nori to his feet.

"The only thing that will save us is daylight! Come on!" shouted Gandalf as he pulled Oin into his feet with the surprising ease.

"On your feet all of you. RUN!" Using his lit staff, he pointed towards the dark and passage in the rock.

I immediately followed the others down the rocky passageway running as fast as my sore limbs would carry me until we finally made it to the end where we could see the sunshine flooding into the passage from the exit.

We ran straight out of the passage and into a thicket of trees. We ran as far as we could from the mountain until we reached a clearing where we stopped to catch our breath. I leant against a tree beside Thorin and tried to even out my breath as much as possible as the others did the same. I looked up at Thorin who was smirking at me before pulling me into a tight embrace. I smiled and wrapped my arms around his torso as he wrapped his arms around my shoulders. He broke the hug and grabbed my hand. Entwining his rough fingers with my small slender ones.

"Five, six, seven... Bifur, Bofur, that makes nine... Fili, Kili, Thorin, Arya that's thirteen and Bombur makes fourteen." Said Gandalf as he counted each one of us. "Wait! Where's Bilbo? Where our Hobbit?" He panicked

My head shot up and looked around for any sign, I engage my heightened senses to see if I could sense the halfling but no avail.

"Oh he has to be around here somewhere" I stated.

"I thought he was with Dori!" Shouted Dwalin.

"Don't blame me!" Snapped Dori.

"When did you last see him?" Yelled Gandalf at the pair who were now glaring at each other.

"I thought I saw him slip away when they first caught us?" Offered Nori.

"No I saw him after that." I said confused and worried.

"Tell me what happened!" Shouted Gandalf, panic and fear lining his every word.

"I'll tell you what happened! Mister Baggins saw his chance and he took it. He has thought of nothing but his comfy bed and his warm hearth since he first left his home! We will not be seeing our burglar again. He is long gone!" said Thorne angrily. I tightened my grip on Thorin's hand gesturing for him to calm down. I shook my head disapprovingly knowing how much it would hurt the young halfling's feelings if he had heard what Thorin had said.

"No! He isn't!" Said Bilbo as he emerged from behind tree. My face broke out into a grin when I saw him and I ran over to him, wrapping him in a bone crushing hug. I could a new power, one I had felt in years. I pulled away from Bilbo, looking him up and down to figure out with I could sense. Bilbo looked uncomfortable and nervous. He's hiding something.

"Bilbo Baggins! I have never been so glad to see someone in my life" said Gandalf.

"Bilbo, we'd given up on you" said Kili.

"How in middle-earth did you get past the Goblins?" Asked Fili, shouting more then speaking.

He looked nervous and unsure of what to say. As if he was thinking through a story in his head.

"Well, um, what does it matter? He's back. Safe and sound." I said trying to pull attention away from the Hobbit.

"It matters! I want to know! Why did you come back?" Thorin said throwing a side glare in my direction.

"Look, I know you doubt me, and I know you always have. And you're right, I often think about the Shire. I miss my books and my armchair and my garden. You see that's where I belong that's home that's why I came back because... you don't have a home it was taken from you. But I will help you take it back if I can" said Bilbo, which earned him a smile from each of us and even a humble look from a Thorin.

Suddenly a loud howling noise echoed from behind us. I turned my head is the howl's direction. Horror evident on my face. It was a warg howl, but definitely not one.

"Out of the frying pan..." Said Thorin. I looked at him eyes wide.

"...and into the fire" I mumbled. We locked eyes with Gandalf.

"RUN!" Yells Gandalf.

Thorin grabbed my hand and pulled me away and we began to run with the others. I could hear the warg getting closer, but we kept on running further through the thicket of trees. I skidded to a halt as a warg jumped out and over my head I pulled out my sword before I could kill it buffer hit the wagon its head with his axe I smiled at him before I ran over to Thorin, Fili and Kili.

"Quick into the trees! All of you. Go" Yelled Gandalf. Kili pulled himself up with ease before helping Fili. I summoned my wings, turning into my true form and helped the others get into the tree. One by one I grabbed the dwarves. When I thought I was done, I landed in the top of a tree to see if I could see where the wargs were coming from. The trees were too thick, so I wasn't able to see them. They were getting closer and I looked down only to see that Bilbo was still on the ground. I quickly jumped down the branches to get to the small Hobbit.

"Bilbo!" I shouted which caused everyone to look at the terrified halfling.

I jumped down onto a lower branch and then hung upside down on the branch using my legs to hold on as I offered my hands to Bilbo, who jumped in grabbed my hands before I pulled him up on to the branch with me. I quickly helped him further up the tree with Fili and Kili were. We all look towards the ground where the wargs were circling the trees occasionally jumping trying to reach us. We all look towards an Orc as he strode towards the other Orcs riding a white warg. The Orc had skin that was deathly pale and was covered in scars. His eyes were blood red and his left arm had been cut off and a hook was in its place

"Azog!" Said Thorin was venomous disdain is his mouth. His eyes grew wide and shock of seeing his old enemy.
