Melanie was nervous. She had spent all day at school worrying over the rally. She could not stop. At practice, she could not land the flip. She finally decided not to go Phillip not to catch her. Instead, she would have him catch her and t would all be okay. At the moment, she was brushing her hair out of its frizzy mess. Cherry was doing her make-up and said "You look beautiful."

Melanie smiled "Thanks but I just realized that I hate my curly hair."

Cherry started whispering "I love it. Imagine if you had Marcia's stick straight brunette hair. You have the light fluffy brunette curly hair. I would much rather have that than Marcias."

Melanie looked into her eyes "Don't talk bad about her. She is very pretty."

Cherry looked over at Marcia "But plain."

Melanie stood up "I'm gonna go get in costume." She walked off fast. She felt guilt overwhelm her. Marcia was a sweet girl and she didn't like talking about her . She put on the top piece of the costume which was a royal purple color with a lavender flag in the middle. Then she slipped on the skirt which was the same but with lavender polka dots. She tied her hair into a high ponytail when she realized it. The shirt was exposing her stomach. She ran to Cherry and yelped "It's too small."

Cherry laughed "Duh. The team requested them this year."

Melanie looked around and she saw all the other girls wearing the revealing shirts. Melanie shook her head "Cherry! This isn't the usual cheer clothes."

Cherry pushed Melly off of her "Cut it off. Go put your bow on."

Melanie sighed and she put on the bow. She wasn't comfortable with her stomach showing in front of everyone. Especially her parents. She finished doing her make-up and the football team came out. "Look at those costumes."

Melanie looked up and made eye contact with one of the players. He smiled and winked at her "Looking nice."

Melly blushed "No I don't."

He smirked "Why would I lie to someone who looked like you. Dazzling."

Melanie waved him off "You guys go on off to the field."

He licked his lips and said "I will be waiting for ya." Then he ran off .

Cherry smiled from afar and thought "Good another SOC is flirting with her. Maybe that will get her mind off that dirty Greaser."

The sun has set and the people began to arrive. Soon the place was packed and the intercom system started up. "Welcome back to the number one high school in Tulsa! We are going to be number one in state for football this year. If you know that is true than cheer"!

Everyone cheered.

" Lets have a round of applause for the Royals"!

The cheer team ran out in their organized order. "Stronger than Steel. Hotter than the sun. The Royals won't stop till they get the job done"!

Then the football team ran out which was the sign for the girls to do the hand springs. Melly threw her body forward, her legs going over her and she landed it. She cheered as she landed it.

Cherry stood in front of the team and said "Come on Royals what's our cry"?!

The whole crowd yelled "V-I-C-T-O-R-Y"!

Then the rest of the cheer team shouted "Victory Royals"!

Everyone cheered and the rally kept in going with screams and cheers. The rally was coming to an end and it was time for Melly to do her flip. She felt Phillips hands grab her waist.

At the moment, Sodapop was waiting for Ponyboy to get out of the bathroom. They started walking back at there own pace but then Sodapop saw Cherry do a handstand in front of everyone. Oh no, he was late.

Melanie was thrown into the air. A little to high. She threw her upper body weight forward and her legs followed. Her adrenaline began to rush and she felt her heart non-stop beat. She was finishing off the flip when she saw Phillip move from position.

Sodapop tried running into the gate but it was locked. No one would open it. He started climbing it

Melanie felt anxiety rush through her veins. She was going to have to land it. The time went by so slowly and her legs slowly hurdled over her body. Soon her body was back in standing position.

Cherry covered her mouth and thought "Where is Sodapop"?! she screamed to Melly "MELANIE YOUR-"!!

Melly was few feet from the ground and she looked up as soon as she heard her name. She completely out of focus. Her feet landed with a crunch and she collapsed on the ground.

Sodapop tried running to her but a football player shoved him "Get out Greaser"! Sodapop backed up and ran as close to the gate as she could get. "Melanie, are you okay"?

Melanie didn't get up. She looked down at her foot and her bone had popped out of position. Tears rolled from her eyes but she was dry crying. She didn't make a noise. She just layed there. Wondering if she could ever walk again.

Cherry shrieked as tears surged out of her eyes "Melanie. Oh my Gosh! Please don't die"! She ran to Melanies side and she sobbed I to her arm "This is all my fault"!

Melly looked up and sputtered "How"?

Cherry sobbed even harder "I told Phillip not to catch you."

Melanie glared at her and said "I thought you were my friend."

Soon the ambulance arrived and rolled her into it. Sodapop was about to climb in with her but the football player (the one who had been checking Melly out) yelled at him "GET THE HELL AWAY FROM HER. WE ALL KNOW SHE DOESN'T WANT TO WAKE UP TO A DIRTY, NASTY GREASER"!

Sodapop was thrown back and he screamed to Melly "I will see you there, I promise"!

Melly looked desperately and wished she could have stood up for Sodapop ,but she couldn't. She couldnt.
