It had been a week since my mom's been in the hospital. It had been a week since that horrendous sight of my mom on the floor, lifeless. It had been a week.
When Vikram and I found mom inside the house, we called the ambulance and brought her to the hospital. Everything was happening so fast and I was so scared. I came with my mom in the ambulance. I couldn't leave her alone. She's my mother.
Vikram didn't think it was a good idea for me to be alone at the hospital, especially in such a situation and my condition as well.
He stayed behind to help the police investigate the situation and ask the neighbours what had happened. They found that a intruder had entered the house and attacked my mom once she had returned from Gauri aunty's house. The police is on the lookout to find the intruder.
A lot has changed in a week.
I haven't spoken to my mom in a week. She's been in critical care and no one was allowed to visit due to the heavy supervision of nurses. I could only see her through a thick glass window.
She laid on her bed with her hands on either side of her body. Her head was strapped around to hold in a firm place. Her skin looked so pale.
I missed her touch. I missed her smile. I missed her nagging. I missed her yelling. I missed everything about her.
I walked over to the chairs and sat down, placing my head in my hands. I let out a silent cry. The tears burned my skin as they fell down. My head was pounding with the migraine I've had all week. My body wasn't reacting very well to my medication in this stress either but, I kept taking pills to relieve myself temporarily, even if it meant overdosing myself.
I brushed off my tears from my face and put my hair in a messy bun. Just then, I felt a one hand on my thigh and the other reaching for my right hand. It was Ankita Masi, my mom's cousin.
I looked at her with eyes full of pain and sorrow. She smiled back with great uncertainty. I turned back to the door. The door that had my mother on the other side.
"She can't leave me alone. She can't." I said after a while.
"I know dear and I know she's fighting to stay for you." She was now rubbing my back comforting me throughout this painful journey. "But beta, you need to listen to me clearly. She would have expected a lot from you at a time like this. Go home, freshen up, groom yourself. Nothing will happen to her. She'll be here and doctors will inform you if there is any change. And talk to Vikram. He's been visiting everyday, bringing you food and extra clothes, calling me to check up on your mom and you, worrying about you. He's even trying to install some security cameras in your house and on the street. He's been in full contact with the police and keeps updated with the case."
"I just need him to give me some time."
She was right. Vikram had been coming to the hospital everyday since the incident. He had the same routine everyday. He would come to see the doctor first, making sure there was some progress or positive response in her treatment or to ask when the reports will come back. Then he would spend some time looking through the window on the door to mumma's bed. Sometimes he brought coffee for me or Ankita Masi if she was here.
He would come sit with me. Silently. No one would say a word. I would let out my silent tears and he would trace circle with his thumb on the back of my hand. Just his presence alone had helped me mentally a lot.
Everyday. Everyday he tries to talk to me. He tries to get me to pour my heart out or tell me how I feel or say anything to him really. But, I can't. No words come out in front of him. I would just walk away and he would leave just to come back the next day.
