"Watch where you're going?". I heard someone snap. I slowly looked up in fear. There was a rather monstrous man standing in front of me with a flushed face. He was exhaling in large doses. I could tell he was under the influence of drugs with the way his breathe smelled and from the red in his eyes. Increasing my fear, his eyes softened up and he pushed a strand of my hair from my face to behind my ear. I took a step back and looked down.

"I'm so..sorry."

And with that apologize, I put my hat back on, grabbed my coffee and ran out of the shop before the creepy guy could say or do anything. As I opened the door, I was hit with the strong, cold, whistling winds of the winter. The cold air hit the exposed skin on my face.

I reached to my bags and gripped it closer towards my chest as I began walking in this harsh wind. The weather was starting to become a struggle to deal with. The winds had started to pick up in the matter of minutes. Luckily, for me, my destination was just across the street.

I crossed the street carefully and opened the door to a local bookshop.

"Hi Samaira. Thank God you're here. How are you?"

"Hey Kavya. Just another day for me. How are you?"

Kavya was my boss. She was a 27 year old who loved to party, drink and have the time of her life. She inherited the bookshop from her grandmother who passed away a couple months ago. Reflecting on her personality, you'd think she would have sold the shop and used the money to party or go shopping. But, Kavya loved to read and what could be better than owning your own bookshop.

"I'm good. Just a bad headache from last night."

"Stop pushing yourself. Drinking isn't going to help you get over anything. Stop when you need too."

Kavya had started drinking more heavily 3 months ago when her French boyfriend of 5 years was caught french-kissing her best friend. She used drinking and partying as her escape route from her feelings and emotions.

When I had met her, she was crying in the coffee shop bathroom from across the street with a bottle of vodka in her hand. I brought her to her shop and put her to sleep after giving her an aspirin. Then customers walked in and I took over the store for the day. She had offered me a job and helped me find an apartment here. Basically, my only friend and my support here.

"Yah, yah, whatever. Neither does moping around in bed." I rolled my eyes at her. "We finally received our new order and I need to put all the books out by tonight. So, do you mind taking care of the cash and arranging all the books on those carts there." She said pointing to the carts.

"Sure. I'll handle this stuff."

I put down my purse and a recyclable bag that had a bottle of wine and my lunch, along with some flowers. As I was hanging my coat on the coat rack, I had taken the flowers out of the bag and put them in the green vase on the cash counter.

"By the way, my cousin, Rahul, is in town. He's pretty good with the ladies and I promise he's a total gentleman. Can I hook you guys up?" Kavya beamed with excitement.

I shook my head. The last thing I needed was a new person in my life.

"Samaira, come on. You've been here for 3 months and haven't seen you go on a date. Who knows, it could even work out." She begged.

"Kavya, I really just need time for myself. I'm not looking for anyone right now."

"Fine." Thank God she gave me on that. "But, I just want to ensure you that he doesn't bite.

"Okay now, go work on the new order."

She walked to the back of the shop laughing.

I smiled at the sound of her laughter and walked towards the carts full of books. I had to reorganize the books and stock them on the shelves.
