The moonlight shone directly on his face.
-
His face was covered with a large scar, across his whole face. But there was a warm smile on his lips.
"I'm sorry if I scared you. I'm Hallstein. Do you remember me? And I'm sorry for today."
Lis looked at him skeptically.
"Maybe you should use the bread towel to take care of your leg." He pointed to her bloody leg and looked at the bread.
-
Lis took the bread and took a bite of it. It was really dry and hard, but better than nothing. She used the cloth to cover the wound and the boy made a tight knot so that it didn't open.
"You shouldn't eat all your bread yet. I don't know when you'll get your next ration."
-
A man in a helmet walked past and struck his gun against the iron bars of the cells.
"Shut up! Or talk silent."
-
A further three men entered through a large wooden door that led into the arena. They were fighting a small beast that was trying to escape, and the men had great difficulty in holding it back.
"Take the head! Put it down! And take care of the tail!"
You could hear a loud growl, again and again you could notice the flashing of explosions and a hissing sound.
"Make sure to bring the little beast in his cell. Alive! And make sure you tie up the mouth and the wings. Put it into chains!"
-
Lis stood up and moved as far as the chains allowed it into the direction of where the lights and noises came from.
"Karma? Little friend is that you?" Lis couldn't see anything, she felt blind. But than she saw the frames of the event.
"No no no no! Don't hurt him!"
She boxed against the cell walls.
"Leave ihm! He's innocent!"
Some tears came out of her eyes and the little dragon roared painfully.
"Leave him out of all this!"
Lis sank on her knees, a guard came and hit the celldoor with his sword.
"Shut the fuck up!"
-
Hallstein looked sadly to Lis.
"Listen. I know what you'll have to go through. I know it won't be easy, either for you or your little friend. I know that because I had to survive the same pain. But I can help you to survive better. Your father will only stopp if he reached his goal."
He paused and took a deep breath.
"If you want to get out of here you'll have to train and follow your father's orders. In your cell I will help you to train your body and strength. I will also teach you what you need to know about the world. But the pain is a thing that I can't help you with. It's part of your father's program and if I don't so what he says ...."
He pointed to the cell opposite, in which a man who was almost starved and emaciated was chained to the wall. The moonlight made his blood-covered body with scars, bruises, cuts and scars visible.
"I don't want to end up like him" he started whispering "and honestly: I'm planning my escape."
-
He sat down and leaned his head back.
Lis began slowly to ask.
"Sir? What will happen to me? I I mean what happened to you?"
He didn't answered but smiled.
"Not today sweety, this story can wait. You should try to sleep that your leg can heal."
-
-
Hegar came home and dropped into the large wooden chair.
"Bring me some beer! And something real to eat!"
Lis' mother came out of the pantry with a mug of beer and ham.
She put down the pitcher with a lot of noise on the table. With a serious tone and face, she started talking.
"We need to talk old man!" She pounded the table with her palms.
"Where is my daughter? You were the last one who saw her. Now tell me where she is!"
Hegar looked straight on his beer but than he put it back on the table and put on a sad face.
"I'm sorry to tell you ... but I was too slow and couldn't save her. We went through the forest to discover new places on the island where Lis could train her little friend, but. .. "He paused and took a sip of beer. "The mother showed up. She took Lis together with the dragon away. The only thing what I could save was her bag. But I swear we won't give up untill we found her dead body."
-
Lis mother went some steps back, on her face a traumatized look. Tears runned out of her face like waterfalls. "N No. My baby, my little baby." She runned out of the door and straight ahead into the woods.
"Lis? Lis? Baby are you there? Can you hear me?" Nothing exept the pure silence.
-
Hegar looked into the burning fire in front of him. He started to grin. "So gullible."
