 "I swear that I didn't do it!"

I glared at Principle Riley and Mrs. Zang, my arms crossed and my foot tapping against the hardwood floor of the principle's office. Zang's eyes were alight with a raging fire whereas Riley's eyes were starting to have bags underneath them.

"Students placed you at the scene," Zang snapped.

I threw my hands up. "Because my locker is next to your classroom! Has been since the start of the school year."

"Perfect for you to plan this little stunt."

"You consider that perfect? Maybe a perfect hell where I have to see your face more than I already have to, you old ha-"

"Enough," Riley jumped in, shooting me a warning look before sinking back into his seat. He sighed heavily and rubbed the bridge of his nose. "While I would like to believe that you had nothing to do with the lab incident-"

Zang shot daggers at the back of Riley's head.

"-the evidence says otherwise."

Zang turned and sneered at me. I sneered back before turning to Riley.

"Mr. Riley, you know me." I held the palms of my hands up as I spoke. "You know that if I had anything to do with those beakers exploding, I would take the credit. Hell, even if I suggested it, I would still take some of the credit."

Now that I was talking to him, I allowed my tensed body to take a break. I've been at his school for two years and visiting his office was almost a weekly occurrence. And while he was infuriated and impatient with me at first, he has grown used to my antics and we've become buddies. Or as buddy-buddy you can get with your principle. He still gave me detentions when I did something really out of line, but for the most part, he lectured me and sent me off with practically a slap on the wrist.

Riley appeared to have aged ten years as he stared down at his clasped hands. His whiting beard seemed to have turned whiter and his blue eyes became worn and faded to the point that the spark that's usually there had dimmed.

"You have a reputation, Ms. Holme," he said dejectedly. "There were the fire alarms-"

"I dared someone, not entirely my fault."

"Then there was the graffiti-"

"I made sure it was washable!"

"Then the field trip to the zoo-"

"Ok, that one I had no idea what happened, but I am innocent."

His face turned hard. "You released a twenty foot python."

I threw my hands up. "I'm telling you: last I saw it, it was behind the glass!"

"Are you telling me that the python just magically transported out of its exhibit?"

I rolled my eyes. "No, I'm saying the glass pulled some Harry Potter crap and disappeared long enough for it to escape. I don't know what happened, but I'm telling you, that wasn't me."

He shook his head. "Don't you see, Ms. Holme? You have a reputation; one that cannot be dismissed as much as we would want to. Can you see why the evidence is partial towards Mrs. Zang?"

Zang held her head high as if already claiming victory.

I clenched my fists, my blood turning into fire.

I felt a hand wrap around mine and looked up to see Mom. I had almost forgotten she was there. She had yet spoken since she came in, only greeting the two school officials and asking what happened before retreating to the corner as I started yelling at Zang for that woman's impossible accusations.
