[CHAPTER TWO]
[a blast from the past]
A 14 year old Margaret Kane sat in the back of the grey coloured classroom with her eyes trained down on her notebook. Earth Science, though one of her favourite subjects, could grow to be quite a bore given she had already completed the course twice over in her own time. Her boredom had led to a large sketch of a DNA strand down the side of her page.
For nearly a year she had been most interested in the engineering of genetics, hoping that soon enough she could manipulate her own in order to survive the high radiation levels of Earth. She wanted to be the first person for 100 years to make it to the ground and lead her people back home. She would be famous, and adored by everyone on the Ark. At least that was the dream.
"Correct me if I'm wrong Miss Kane, but this is Earth Skills. You're in the wrong class if you're looking to be studying biology." Margaret was startled by the presence suddenly in front of her and turned her wide eyes to face Charles Pike, a respected teacher from farm station. The young Kane however wasn't too fond of the man, though he was in fact a brilliant teacher, he was a very passive and easily agitated man.
"Sorry." She mumbled closing over her notebook, lowering her gaze. "What was that?" Pike questioned, his voice now far louder than before, attracting the attention of the entire class. Margaret could do nothing but look at the man and shake her head. "You say sorry 'Sir', I am your superior Miss Kane and you should address me as such." Her jaw clenched in both anger and embarrassment. Her peers chuckled with their friends, watching on the the Ark's princess was scolded by their teacher. She wanted nothing more than scream at the man in front of her, but she withdrew, letting a long, heavy sigh escape her lips.
"Sorry... sir."
The class had continued in silence bar from a few chuckles and side-eyes, and soon after had ended, faster than ever before, Margaret had gathered her books and rushed out of her classroom. Without looking back for a second, she made many left and right turns, bumping into a few people a long the way. She would not be humiliated like she had just been ever again, and she knew just the person to take care of her ordeal.
She opened the rather heavy door to her families decently sized living quarters throwing her books on a chair before proceeding to enter her fathers room. Margaret had found her father sitting by his desk writing what seemed to be important notes. His back faced her, but even so she could imagine the stern, concentrated frown he probably wore.
"I want you to fire him. Charles Pike, get rid of me him for me." The girl exclaimed, Marcus Kane sighed, placing down his pen and turning to look at his daughter. He was not a stranger to demands such as this, especially in relation to her school teachers. Though Marcus didn't doubt that she was, Margaret believed she was far more intelligent and henceforth superior to all of her teachers, meaning that comments like this were far from foreign.
