Agatha came back and caught Vivian, chin up, and looking at the sky with the upmost curosity in her eyes. She's never seen something so bleak and grey to be so beautiful. "Ahem," Agatha coughed, catching Vivian off guard. "Erm so I talked with my brother, and he wants to meet with you in his office now."
She froze. "Pardon me?"
"You heard me," she squealed with delight. "Go in there, I promise you that you won't be disappointed."
Agatha had a silly smile on her face as Vivian passed here. "I-I don't even know where the office is," she said, whipping around.
"Oh of course yes," Agatha said, closing the glass panels from behind her. She pointed to the left of the stairs, that ended in a short hallway, one that was dark and isolated from the rest of the large house. "Just down there by that last door there."
"That's really scary," Vivian muttered, the goosebumps crawling on her arms.
Agatha rolled her eyes. "That's my brother, my father says to him all the time 'son! you need some light in that room, it's so dark you can barely see a thing'. And Jasper always replied back with 'No I like the darkness, it gives me peace and mind' humph! sometimes I think he's going to turn into a hit man. Who could ever like such darkness when there's so much light in the world?"
Vivian almost laughed at her mockery as Agatha big her good luck and disappeared back into the kitchen to pester the maids. She gulped and let the darkness engulf her. Her trembling hands turning the door knob.
There was Jasper, snuffing a cigar like no tomorrow and reading the same newspaper Agatha threw away in the trash. It was dirty, but he didn't seem to care. He looked up the moment the door creaked open and Vivian timidly stepped by the door frame, nervous.
"Well don't just stand there," he said coldly, taking off his eyeglasses. "Mr. Smith, is everything thing alright, you look like a frightened cat."
"Sorry, sir," she muttered, closing the door quietly behind her. "I just hoped you haven't reconsidered your decision, no matter what Agatha says I'd gladly take any job you offer me. I just need the money."
Jasper fixed the dents on his newspaper. "No I think my dear sister makes some good points. Have you met my cousin Reuben?"
Vivian lied and shook her head.
"Good," he snapped. "He's a horrible cousin, always challenging my authority over the family's wealth ever since it was made clear that as the only man of my father's decent I shall inherit it all; leaving him without a penny."
Vivian gulped as Jasper drummed his fingers down on his desk in silence. "I need someone that malleable, someone to look up at me and follow through with what I teach them without challenging my authority. Do you understand."
Vivian nodded her head furiously, not saying a word.
Where was he going with this?
"I'm tired of all these bastard men, you see," he said, taking another snuff of smoke. He stopped mid sentence and saw Vivian staring at him timidly. "Look at me, talking about my problems when I did even offer you anything yet. Where's the decency in that? fellow coworker. You want a cigar Mr. Smith"
Coworker? Vivian had no idea what that meant, none whatsoever.
"No thank you," Vivian drawled. "I....don't smoke."
"Nonsense," Jasper reached under one of his doors in the desk and grabbed a packaged cigar handed her one. It was the same one her parents specifically told her to avoid. For the act was quite taboo for women to do. Vivian hesitated to take it, shaking her head at it once more.
But Jasper wasn't having any of it. "Here," he said, pushing the waxy stuff in he hand. "You don't know what it's like until you've tried it, and it does wonders for a man."
He lit the cigar and a wade of smoke left the ends of it. He looked at her expectantly, his dark eyes with the same sense of determination in them as Agatha's. Vivian took a deep breath and dragged the cigar to her mouth with parted lips. Jasper silently stared, watching her. She felt the pure pressure suck her in, pushing her over the edge unwillingly.
HACK!
And just like that, a taboo was broken.
