Vivian broke out in a series of coughs. Jasper looked at her, a twinkle of amusement in his eye. She wrinkled her nose and made a sore face. "That's absolutely disgusting," Vivian coughed.
"You'll get used to it, eventually." Jasper took another puff of smoke casually, blowing up the whole office with smoke like a chimney. Vivian wrinkled her nose, letting the cigar burn out. "Have you any idea what a coworker means?"
Vivian shook her head, "Not in the context of what you want me to do, no, I don't."
"Well obviously there's a lot of work to be done. But you, Mr. Smith, just got lucky."
"Excuse me?"
Jasper had this permanent scowl on his face he couldn't seem to get rid of. "You know I did some research while you were in the changing room." He watched as Vivian's facial expressions faltered. "And I've never seen your kind around here Mr. Smith, in fact no one has. Which leaves me to believe, you're hiding something."
She kept shaking her head. It was in that very moment Vivian felt like a blasted fool. Lies! where are the lies!
"Where is your family Mr. Smith?" he pestered her.
"Charleston," she spluttered, "they uh- kicked me out because I wasn't pulling my weight in the family after I got a cold and left town."
Jasper rose an eyebrow. "That's a cruel life Mr. Smith. Sounds like a newspaper I read two weeks ago."
Vivian shifted her feet nervously, "It's much different than what you read on newspaper, sir."
Jasper studied her blank, guilty ridden face for a moment when he nodded and pulled out a sheet of paper. "Well, you have my condolences," he muttered carelessly.
"So why did you want to meet with me again," she asked, desperately changing the subject.
He leaned forward on the desk. "I've come to a brilliant conclusion, with the help of my sister of course."
Vivian gulped. "I don't think I like the sound of that," she muttered to herself out loud.
"I'm going to teach you a few things that I know," Jasper's eyes hardened and he turned over what Vivian realized was a contract. "Little by little at a time, just in case you try to screw me over." His eyes got darker when he looked up at her. "I'll know if you try to outsmart me."
"Okay," Vivian said quietly. She didn't really care if she screwed him over; but the tone alone of Jasper's threatening voice scared Vivian to bits. "But what's so big that you think I'm going to screw you over on?"
"You won't," he narrowed his eyes. "You'll be screwing over my dear old nephew Reuben."
Vivian's lip parted in shock, her heart beating faster than a rocket at full speed. "I-I can't do that, I don't even know the guy. What harm as he possibly done to anyone? he's your nephew."
"He's a whining scoundrel that wants to challenge my authority and abuse the inheritance my father leaves behind. The co-owner status is to be left to him, the next male in the family. But the position is vulnerable right now. "
"How is it vulnerable? Reuben is family isn't he?"
"He's not!" Jasper roared, taking Vivian by surprise. She leaned by in her chair, shaken.
Jasper's fingers lifted to his mouth to stop him before flying back to the desk in fists. "Sorry, I haven't told anyone anything but between us men you must promise to keep this a secret from my over sentimental sister."
Vivian stayed frozen to her chair. "Anything for you, sir," she mustered out in a murmur. Her voice shook with dread and it was all too obvious for Jasper to sense that, so he lowered his voice.
"My father has been taking long trips over seas a lot now, and it is not involve any business matters." He said quietly. "I do not wish to say the exact reason, but I'm having trouble keeping this away from my sister. And I'm having trouble keeping my close family away from greedy baboons like Reuben."
Vivian didn't know how to feel, for her family hated the Wright's for as long as she could remember. The only person she liked from the Wrights was Reuben himself. He was nice, funny, and believed in the prospects of women. Much more than Jasper did. That was for sure.
"Reuben.." Jasper's voice continued to echo in her head. "doesn't deserve any position in this business, not to me at least. I need a temporary filler." He said, hinting towards Vivian. " Listen, all I need someone to shut their mouth and pretend like they're working next to me for five years. You will get paid the same amount, while I get to control everything. So.." he pushed the contact forward with a pen ready in hand. "Do we have a deal?"
Vivian almost choked.
"FIVE YEARS?"
