It has always been a challenge for me to write or even speak about love. It's a common feeling yet too broad to tackle. I think it's the subject I wanted to talk about but unsure if I can really speak about it.
Even though many people in this world already tried to define this word, it seems as if it still exists mysteriously. Therefore, instead of defining it, I would like to share a teaching I learned from our parish priest.
Love, love is the word we usually use to express a deep feeling inside us. A wonderful emotion we feel towards someone special, like our parents, our friends, our special someones and to our Creator. Therefore, we should be familiar with the classifications of love. In fact, in the Catholic doctrine, there are four kinds of love.
The first one is what we called "Philia" or "Phileo". We usually feel this kind of love towards our friends, brothers, and sisters. It is usually towards something we find delightful. Most often, it is referred to as the "Brotherly love".
The second one is the most famous because it's common and often referred to as the feeling with attraction. We call it "Eros", the sexual kind of love. The love we feel towards someone special. It is the passionate love towards our partners.
The third one is "Storge", it is the love we feel for our parents as well as the love we feel towards our children. It is the natural affection we feel for our family.
The last but the most beautiful kind of love is what we called "Agape". It is charitable, selfless and unconditional. The love our Father is feeling for us. It is never-ending. The kind of love that brought us many wonderful things. The kind of love we should aspire to have for one another.
Even if there are classifications of love, what is important is that we know how to love and express our emotions to others. Not just to those who are special to use but also for those who need our love.
Let us not forget, that love is the greatest gift we can give. And that sacrifice is the greatest language of love.
