I was never one to believe in fate, perhaps, I was wrong.

 Chp. 6

Jack's room was open and very comfy. Natural lighting coming from the windows towards the top of the walls. Unfortunately, in the morning light came through the windows early, too early. I awoke to Jack groaning to the sun's rays. He turned over to his side, facing me. I opened my eyes and yawned. I was so tired I felt I could sleep for weeks.

"You awake?" Jack asked while shifting in bed.

"Yep," I said in a groggy voice.

He turned and threw the blankets off. My face felt as if it was on fire and I turned to my other side. Jack, shirtless lay in bed. A slim, handsome figure. Deep breathes Ethan, I thought to myself. The feeling I felt yesterday was still present, this wasn't helping.

"Want to play some more video games before we get ready for the day," Jack asked, face in the pillow.

"What else is there to do," I chuckled.

Jack rolled out of bed onto the blankets on the floor. I followed his role and when I hit the ground army crawled towards the system. Jack, what seemed with his dying breath turned on the system and lightly threw me a controller.

"Let's get to the next objective," Jack yawned and started to enter the next dungeon with me behind him.

"Game over," I said, reading the screen.

We groaned in unison. I think we were a bit too tired to focus. Jack apparently recognized this as well. He turned to me and looked at my eyes. I nodded and he turned off the system. Jack got up and held the door.

"Monkey's first," Jack said with humor in his tone.

"Woof, woof," I tried to mock him.

He chuckled back at me and lead me to the bathroom. He opened a dark wood drawer underneath the sink and pulled out a new blue toothbrush for me as well as some other supplies. We brushed our teeth and while brushing I noticed something.

"Why did your father ask me if I was a carnivore or herbivore yesterday," I asked after spitting into the sink.

Jack gurgled some water and spat it out. He turned to me.

"Surely you know about natural instinct. You know like hunting and stuff," he said as I leaned against a wall.

"Maybe it's different in your world, but here herbivores and carnivores live together and because of that eating meat," Jack paused.

"At least in public is definitely a no-no," Jack said while walking towards the door.

"Then, do you eat meat? At least at home?" I asked, confused from the situation.

"No, I don't think it's right. My dad stopped eating meat after I told him what I thought about it. However, eggs are ok," Jack led me to the kitchen.

"He might seem cold, but he does have a reason," Jack told me as we reached the kitchen.

If Jack knew about how he was treating me and didn't say anything, it most likely meant that everything should be ok. I had to put my trust in him, after all, who else is there?

"I believe you. Jack, as corny as this sounds," I sighed and looked down.

"You're all right? So I'll trust you, I'll trust you until things settle down and then after that. You were nice to me from the start, that's not something everyone would do," I said, tears nearly falling from my eyes.

Jack looked down and his slight grin faded. His face was serious and empty. He slowly raised his head with his features in the same position. He almost resembled his father but his face was still much kinder. Jack's serious face couldn't hold up, he started to chuckle. The chuckle led to full-on laughter.

"Your right, that is corny. Please excuse me," Jack covered his mouth, still chuckling.

"But, I appreciate your honesty," He smiled a thousand miles wide.

"For now, what do you want to eat?" Jack asked while opening the fridge door.

Jack wasn't lying about no meat. There were some perishables and that was it. He was truthful to his word.

"I don't mind, anything but eggs though," I asked while peaking into the fridge.

"Then, I'll make us a soy meat scramble," Jack pulled out the ingredients and laid them out on the countertop.

Sounded good, I was pretty hungry myself. Jack was lipping his lips, I guess he was craving it. I smiled as he pulled out a medium-sized pan. Jack started humming as he prepared the ingredients, cooking oil, some greens, and soy meat.

"Did you cook much?" Jack asked me as I started to season the greens that were already cooking.

"I tried, cooking is fun. But, it wasn't my cup of tea," I said while pulling up a barstool to the countertop.

Natural light started to pour through the windows and in the delicate silence, you could hear everything. Birds chirping, Jack's mean father getting out of bed, and the quit sizzles from the stir-fried greens. The aroma was great and the flavor should be excellent.

"Then, what are your hobbies?" Jack asked me while stirring in the soy meat.

I sighed, my hobbies, eh? Not like they mattered anymore. I looked down at the marble countertop, everything I left behind. Everything...

"I like gardening, especially orchids," I wanted to talk about animals but that might come across in a very bad way.

Jack pointed across the room to a plant near the dining room. I walked closer and examined it. A dainty flower stalk, with small bright yellow flowers. I worked my way down, leaves coming from bulb-like structures. An orchid, I looked away. I was the type of person that even If I hated a plant and wanted to get rid of it, I would still keep it because I wouldn't want it to suffer. All the plants and animals I left behind would most likely be mistreated.

"It's pretty," I said bluntly as I walked back to the counter.

Jack saw my expression and quickly turned off the heat and gave the food a quick stir. He rushed over to me.

"I'm sorry, that was inconsiderate. I should have," Jack paused.

"No it's fine, I always liked identifying them. This one is Oncidium twinkle, yellow bird" I wasn't fine but Jack was my lifeline and I didn't want to burden him.

He gave me a small grin and went to fetch a few plates. He started plating the scramble when we both heard footsteps coming up the hall. I took a deep breath, I felt like something horrible was about to happen. Surely not so soon?

"Ahh, Ethan, the person of the hour. Just who I was looking for," although he had emotion in his voice I could tell whatever he was about to spout out wasn't good.

"Dad, I made us some food. Soy Meat scramble!" Jack said with enthusiasm.

I was delighted that Jack interrupted his father. Jack took a portion and handed it to him.

"I'm sorry son, however, Ethan and I should get going. We are going to do some tests to make sure we can keep him safe," safe? Ya right.

"Well, if it is to ensure his safety," Jack said with a disappointed look.

I felt a hand on my shoulder. It was Mr. C's way of saying, follow me. He led me to the front door and handed me a fresh pair of socks. I quickly got ready and before I knew it, we were in his car to who knows where once again.
